Windows Movie Maker still troubles users for its defect on video support, which is limited to AVI, MPEG and WMV files. That means you will fail to import and <a href="http://www.brorsoft.com/how-to/import-mp4-into-windows-movie-maker.html">edit MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker</a>. You need to convert MP4 to Windows Movie Maker natively supported formats like WMV or AVI in advance.

H.264 videos always can't be supported by Windows Movie Maker. One option is to install the H.264 codec, problems may be resolved. Another workaround is to <a href="http://www.brorsoft.com/video-to-software/h264-to-windows-movie-maker.html">convert H.264 files to Windows Movie Maker</a> friendly format like WMV.

What's your original video format? Have a try to <a href="http://www.brorsoft.com/video-converter/">encode videos to WMV</a> before editing in WMM.

Windows Movie Maker can import most file types, but not all file types will work when you try to use them to make a movie. Although AVI is on the list of Windows Movie Maker supported video files, there are many types of .avi files in fact and some can be problematic. Usually, installing a codec package may clear this up for you, but converting the <a href="http://www.brorsoft.com/how-to/import-avi-files-to-windows-movie-maker.html">.avi to the .wmv</a> format before importing into Movie Maker ...
