Is there a custom effect for slight rotation?
Posted: 15 Feb 2007 12:43 PM
Say I took a clip that the horizon was slightly crooked by a few degrees. Are there any effects I can apply to fix this, or perhaps if it weren't too hard, can someone make some? I'm talking for very very slight degrees that are off.

Thanks for the help soo much! :)

I take the clip to VirtualDub for those kinds of rotations....

I'm sure it's possible with a custom effect as I see it done by some of the Adorage effects.

I made some moving rotation effects in this post

You could start with these. If you don't want the movement you could insert a Progress
parameter to freeze it. Here's an example

glow Feb 2007

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Rotation static slight left zoom=1.3" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="1.3" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="1.3" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="ExponentialProgressDuration" value="1.0" />
<Param name="ExponentialProgressScale" value="0.01" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

"progress parameter" is this line in the above example.
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
This "freezes" your effect halfway.

Standard instructions for using Windows Movie Maker XML:
1. Copy and paste into Notepad or any text editor.
2. Save in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\anyname.xml
- assuming C: is your system drive and create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary
- In Notepad make sure you save as .xml, not .txt by using File - Save As... - Save as type = All files
- Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View.
3. Restart Movie Maker.

Thanks for explaining glow. I saved it, but it's not really the effect I wanted. I saved it for future use on other projects though. :)

Care to be more precise about what you wanted?

Well, when I applied it, it didn't do any rotation, (I took out the zooming part cause I didn't want it to zoom) but it cropped my clip WAY in so that a bunch of the side was cut off.

So no rotation, but yet cropping my image. That's why it didn't do at all what I wanted.Smileyhehe

When you rotate, you have to zoom/crop some amount.
(Unless you want it to look like you rotated it)

Here are some rotations I use, just variations of what Glow posted.
There is no zoom, but when you try them out you will see why a
zoom, or a frame overlay would be needed.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Rotation .002" iconid="33" comment="rotate">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.002" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Rotation .004" iconid="33" comment="rotate">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.004" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Rotation .006" iconid="33" comment="rotate">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.006" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Rotation .25" iconid="33" comment="rotate">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Rotation .75" iconid="33" comment="rotate">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.75" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Oh my gosh THANK you so much dlk! That is exactly what I needed and since I have Pixelan Spice FX's crop effects, I can crop in a bit to eliminate the edges. THANK YOU!!! I am so happy. :)

Hmm I just noticed the "slight rotation" effects are only to one side? Am I missing something? What if I need it rotated the opposite way, how do I do that? Thanks

I haven't looked at these in detail, but I notice the parameter says 'left', so it would seem logical that changing some to 'right' would make them rotate the other way... not confirmed though.

CG, that would be correct.
Your logic is infallible...at least until it isn't.

As an aside on that SIMPLE3d effect...
here is a wild page curl that serves no real purpose
that I can think of, but "aint it cool?"

<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">

<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.5" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.5" />
<Param name="ShowABack" value="true" />
<Param name="PageCurlA" value="lowerright" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="0.9" />
<Param name="RevolveCamera" value="true" />
<Param name="RotateA" value="left" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>

I'd never thought of combining the page curl with the rotation and scaling. I've always just done one or the other, but the combination is definitely WILD!

Nice one dlk.
The wild page curl reminded me of the Metacreations twister transition.
I was thinking it might look good as a transition where the page sort of blows away.
Might have a tinker myself later...
