The Ususal Suspect..."my movie won't save!" Posted: 21 Nov 2006 01:27 PM |
1. I've used this program before without a problem.
2. The most recent video I made was similar to the last one I made -it's simply a picture slideshow with music -taken from windows media player.
3. The slideshow is 30 minutes long.
First, I tried to save the movie to a DVD. For about an hour the 'Saving movie' screen was up, and said: Your Movie Is Being Saved. Saving movie... Estimated time remaining... (and there is no progress being shown at all.) Then it says: 'Windows Movie Maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again.'
(This comes up no matter where it try to save it to. I have 160G of free space. All files seem to be in tact.)
I've tried to save it to a DVD, to my computer, to CD, etc. I am not going to split it up or take things out -because I've been reading other people's posts, and that doesn't help them. Restarting the computer doesn't help, reloading the program doesn't help.
My question is...if i have corrupt files or something, how can i figure out which ones are the files that won't let me save...without tearing apart my movie?
Is there a fluke in Windows Movie Maker that needs to be fixed, or what?! It seems everyone is having this issue, and everything it trying different things to fixt the same problem. |

Every once in a while I have this type of problem and it always has to do with MM "not liking" one of my clips.
So, it becomes a game of finding out which one ...
Most of the time, when I find the offending clip, I notice that it is one where I have a lot of "stuff" going on ... meaning lots of transitions or effects.
Generally, what I then do is split the movie at the offending clip, erasing everything from the bad clip onward (including the bad clip). Be sure to save a copy of the original movie ...
Next, I go back to my "copy" and re-input the "good" part of the video and then try merging the "bad part" back to it.
It's not really an easy fix, cause it will require you to re-adjust sound, etc ... but better than losing it all.
This has saved me from losing a ton of work at least 3 times in the last 12 months. |

| So...every single clip has a transition attached to it. ...i just assumed since it's a movie maker, that shouldn't be a problem. ...but, do you think that's what my problem is? Do i just need to get rid of the transitions? |

| I usually have transitions on all my clips and it lets me save. Do you have a lot of videos in your collection? If you do, try deleting some of those, because I had to do that inorder for mine to save. |

| rockstar r suggestion is little known, but a very valid suggestion! Just this past week, I reccommended the very same thing with positive results from the member who was having the same problem. It's also the least invasive thing to try without reworking any of your project. |

You said in your original post you did not want to split your project...why? It is very likely that you may be running into a complexity barrier. It's a simple process. You have not indicated how much ram you have on board which is far more important than how much free space your HD has available. With a project length like that, transitions on every pic,effects,etc...I've seen 6min projects fail to save depending on system configurations.
One other thought...it has recently surfaced for one user and I'm waiting on a reply as to their test results. It may not be a cause, but I'll throw it out any how...
Confirm that none of your source pics have quotation marks around the file name. |

my computer has 2G of ram.
if it's not a big deal, i'd happily split it, i just don't know how. |

| Interesting discussion. I have the same problem...can't save to computer or CD. I have tried all the usual suggestions. Have plenty of space, files are all there, etc. Tried clearing out the "collections" folder, still no luck. Then, I took one of the clips, a simple 20 second .avi clip with NO transitions or anything, and tried to save that little thing to computer...and the same error message! Clearly, this is not a size or complexity issue as some are suggesting. I also can't see any reason why the .avi format shouldn't work, but that is the only other thing I can think of... |

Littlespaz-
To remove large sections of unwanted video...use double split video method outlined below (by dickmr)
When you have your vid on the timeline and working on it....click on the + magnifier above the timeline to the left to magnifiy the seconds so it is easier to work with. Then...play the vid to the spot where you want to split the video at the beginning...stop the vid and place the upright locator at the spot, then go to the top of the screen and click on 'clip' and then 'split'. This will separate the video at that spot. Now, play the vid from there, and find the end spot where you want to cut the video,....stop and place the locator at that spot...and again go to the top to 'clip' 'split' at that point. Now, you see the part you want to remove is a separate clip from the rest of the vid.....click on it to 'select' it.....then right click on it and choose 'delete' and the offending part will be removed.
To split with precision: (from The Doctor and PaPaJohn)
it's a one split procedure, followed by two trims
first split the clip someplace (anyplace in the frames that you know you would discard if you were doing it with 3 splits)... then trim the first clip's end point, and the second clip's start point.
Laidld01-
couple of thoughts regarding your issue...a simple avi file may not be so simple. It may contain a codec used in it's origination (even though avi is uncompressed,it still uses some codec to encode it), that may not be compatible with MM. Your problem, based on info you posted in another thread, may be more of an .dll file that was not effectively updated, or you may need to update your directx file. The trigger to that thought is the fact that you mentioned you could not save as wmv either. I'll include here the directx update link if you want to try that too.
DirectX Update and Diagnostic Tool
Directx link also on this page to update to the latest version.
