Make a heart appear

You know those vidoes in which a person makes a heart shape in the air with his fingertips and the image of the heart actually appears?

How can I make this effect?

Welcome to the forums!!!

There are two ways I know to do this effect in Movie Maker. The first is using a custom overlay and a transition (see the "Edit Movies > XML - Persion Section > Script Types > Custom Overlays" page on Papa John's web site for more detail on this process. The second way is using a technique called "compositing"; considerate guy provided a description of this process in this thread. A search of the forums on "compositing" should turn up other posts that also may be helpful.

I would recommend that you review these two methods, select the one you would like to try and then post back with specific questions on whichever approach you select. You'll find a lot of people here that are willing to help you through the process.

Do you have an image of the heart that you wish to have appear?

G'day Josie and welcome to the forum

That's a challenging request so I'll have a go.

A couple of things came to mind
- Third party program to draw on video perhaps LSmaker?
- Animated GIF

but the challenge here is to do it just using WMM...

1. Make a heart on a bluescreen so we can chromakey it
Now you could draw one yourself in your favourite graphics program but the deal was to stick with WMM.
1a. make a new movie with blank title on a blue background.
1b. duplicate the title
1c apply my Heart Border white transition
1d take a snapshot midway through the transition when you have a heart of the right size. Voila one heart on a blue screen.

2. Animate the heart as if it's drawn by two hands
2a. Remove the heart transition between the clips
2b. Insert the heart still between the two blank clips
2c. Apply transition SMPTE 211 radial left-right, top between the first blank title and the heart still then overlap as far as possible
(I was too lazy to make a proper icon so you'll get a red X)

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" >
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{DE75D012-7A65-11D2-8CEA-00A0C9441E20}" comment="DxtJpeg/SMPTE wipes">
<Transition name="SMPTE 211 Radial, left-right, top" iconid="99">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="211" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="35" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

2d. Save Movie File - voila an animated heart on a blue screen

3. Overlap your background clip with the animated heart
3a. Create a new movie, place your background clip first then the animated heart
3b. Apply the bluescreen transition and overlap as far as possible

Here's a sample (but I was too lazy to film someone waving their hands)

I use Firefox+Greasemonkey scripts for easier editing of forum posts, FAQs and displaying embedded images Wink

glow - great job - much easier than the ways I listed and all done within MM. This is just another example of how we all benefit and, in my case, continue to learn from your postings.
