brady bunch effect!
Posted: 01 Dec 2004 03:28 AM
Im looking for a transition like the brady bunch with like 9 squares where i can put 9 different people in it and its begin hacked like rehan did a while ago when he split transitions. If someone could give me the code or something that would be great. Thanks!

You would have to do it in 9 steps, since movie maker
doesn't support multiple video tracks.
If you are willing to go through the work,
I can tell you how to adjust Rehan's PIP transitions
to do this.
We could probably even make it fancy with chroma keying,
so that each window has a border.

ok...
This may take some playing around, but if you really want it...
Let's start with these 2 transitions(not Rehan's PIP)
They will give you a window, tight in the lower right corner
and one tight center left. See if you can figure out the others.
Upper left would be :
"OffsetX" value="0"
"OffsetY" value="0"

Hi frozen,

Your post inspired me to make another PIP video clip today with 8 videos embedded in it... and I use the same XML code that dlk suggests. But I just use one XML set of info and tweak it between each added video.

The Living Projects > Wedding page of my site has the new video embedded in it. I added one at a time, saving to DV-AVI format with each pass. I tried to put a DV-AVI one over another but got the dreaded 'Can't Save a Movie' error message, so I ended up putting WMV clips over DV-AVI ones and saving it as DV-AVI.... that's good enough for each pass.

... my website isn't here... it's at www.papajohn.org

Hi,
Not sure if you want to tweak my XML code or PapaJohns,
but he said his is pretty much the same, so I don't think it matters.
So...the size would be controlled by...

<Param name="Width" value="112" />
<Param name="Height" value="84" />

Now...there is one little trick/caveat to this.
Those values are always, and must always adhere
to the 320X240 ratio(in my case a use .35 as a multiplier)
320 x .35=112 240 x .35 = 84
Otherwise the window disappears.

Also...like I said before, we can always
create a border, and chroma key it so
each window is fit within a clean border.

PapaJohn,
Besides the fact that ya got wait a while for that montage
to show up(even with my 3.0Mbps DSL)....Very Nice!
I think you were able to walk that fine line...
adding a cool trick, while still keeping a high class
look. Not always so easy.

Hi,
Here would be a poor man's frame transition. This will
give you 9 equal windows, with a black borders. No
chroma key needed. I think it gives you very much like
a Brady Bunch look. Pehaps you would want a wider border,
or to change the color of the border...that could be done.
This is a transition...so you have to transition 2 items...
A black image and your 9 PIP movie will do. The PIP
image goes 2nd on the timeline.

Thanks DLK... the bride and groom just got broadband last week so maybe they can enjoy it too.... both sets of their parents are on old dial-up lines, so no hope there.

The wedding videos are an interesting evolutionary experiment for me... the last one I did for that family was handed to them as a VCR tape.

Ok...now I jump over here, and answer this question.
I feel like I am stalking you.
Are asking about the SMTP Wipe transition that I posted above?
That transition only provides the borders...and is
used in combination with the PIP transitions.
You build all 9 windows...step by step, and once you
have your final video you apply this transition to give the
final effect you desire.
If MM2 supported multiple video tracks, you could
do this all in 1 step, but we are stuck i guess.

You are right, a lot of time has passed, and I think there are better ways to do this now. However, if you are going to stick with this method you have to keep in mind that it's for the 320x240 format(same as the preview window). Save it as high quality video small, and it should look just like the preview.
