Picasa 2 montage and transitions
Posted: 19 Jul 2006 07:24 AM
This post has kind of spawned off another thread.

Here is a vid of the effect

The montage was created within picassa 2 and the custom transitions applied to it.

Full details on my site posting

The Picasa software easily creates a 3x3 montage, but unfortunately it's a square ratio and not ideally a 4x3 ratio. It means the edges of the individual pictures are cropped and the overall image does not display full screen, resulting in bars at the sides - as the video demo shows...If anyone wishes to use a graphics editor to create their own FULL SCREEN 3x3 montage , let me know and I will make simmilar transitions available for the different size...I hope that makes sense !

Al, I am always anxious to see what you're going to come up with next! I think this effect is awesome. I like the looks of the Picasa software too. Thank you for that info, Su

Thanks Su !....I spent ages looking for another free software that would automatically arrange the pictures in a grid but I couldn't find one. Ideally a small bit of software dedicated to the task would be ideal, but I couldn't find one. Googles picassa will do in the meantime. Personally I think it's a great bit of software. It's ideally suited for people wishing to make very quick edits.

It can be downloaded directly via googles homepage.

Hi Al....this is awesome. I couldn't figure an easy way to make the 9 pic collage in Paint Shop Pro, but I could do it pretty easily in Photosuite. I just did a 'file' 'new' and made a blank at 1280 x 960 (4:3)....then I opened each pic and copied and pasted it on the blank and grabbed the corners and sized each one manually to fill the picture out....took only a few minutes and then saved the pic. After thinking about this for a little bit, I think the easiest way that I could do it would be in Powerpoint. Size the Powerpoint slide first (4:3) and then import and put the pics in the 3x3 format on the page and 'save as' into jpeg format...the higher the page size in Powerpoint the greater the picture resolution. I'll try that next time.

This first attempt, however, turned out great. I put an all black title at the beginning then the collage pic and applied the first transition...and pulled the pic about 7 secs into the black....then I put another black title and pulled it into the end of the collage to fade it...right into a second collage pic which I held open for about 2 secs. and then I used the second transition to go into another picture. Looks great, just like all your stuff....thanks for this. I'm going to use it on the vid i'm making of a boat adventure on the big river.

Because of the structure the black lines on the sides were replaced with part of the pictures....if you change that I'll get that too, but the way it is already has a cool look about it. Thank You!

Thanks for the comments dickmr ...

I'll definitely work on some full screen transitions. Picasa offers a simple way to create a montage and that's what I was really interested in - keeping it simple. However, there is no way it can match the flexibility of using a graphics editor. I quite like the idea of adding a simple border to each picture to give a bit of seperation.

I use the free and excellent openoffice suite which has a powerpoint type application included. I'll see if it's possible to use the method you describe with that .

I'll work on some fullsize transitions over the next couple of days

It might not be suitable for everybody but my favourite is command line based: Imagemagick. It can be used to automate the image processing steps. For example I created the montage of images on my website using this: split.jpg | metacreations.gif

Again brilliant, Al. I had just put Picasa on this computer and tried it (liked it very much) and tried the other transitions the using dickmr's idea (thank you, dickmr), when I saw that you had created a full screen set. I love them. I'm just about to start a new video and I will certainly be using these. Thank you, Su

Oh wow, is that ever a stunning thing. After seeing that I'm not using a solid black title background anymore!!! ha ha ha I finished my 'river' vid already, but now that the full screen xml is in my arsenal I'll be really set for my next project!
This has a lot of possibilities for experimenting with backgrounds, duplicates, borders, tints/colors etc...and after rendering and reimport various titling and effects can be tried too....in the end though the simple beauty of it may suffice!! Thanks again for this cool stuff.

Thanks Su...even if it's just you and dickmr use this effect/technique then the effort has been worth it :-)

I've discovered another way for creating the montage. I use Picassa to export the pictures to a smaller size and then import them directly in to Inkscape. I'll expand on the details later.

Rehans method looks like it could hold a lot of promise , I'll investigate that as well when I get time, although it looks a bit tricky to learn being script based.

Applied this effect to two picture montages from Picasa and love it! I also tried it with regular video... very interesting results... are you still working on the 5x5 from the other post? Just curious.

BTW...here is a png of the black border lines used for the full screen 3x3 montage. It's the one used in my vid demo...It may prove useful

I must also stress that the video must be saved in a true 4x3 pixel ratio - otherwise the transition won't align correctly with the montage image.

I've abandoned the 5x5 for now in favour of keeping things simpler with a 3x3.

Thanks

Thanks Rehan...PIP Plus is a gift from the heavens for this kind of effect. One thing though...I've had to use -ve numbers and values greater than one to achieve the four different zoom effects. Is that OK?...It seems to work absolutely fine but the info on your site suggests values between 0-1 for the normal range...I'd be grateful if you could confirm that for me please

Here is the xml code for those brave enough !...You must have a registered version of PIP+ installed

Thanks fellas- that little demo doesn't do justice to it very well. The zooms are nice and smooth on a decent quality video file...I'm in the process of cleaning up some of the transitions. I hadn't noticed before but some unwelcome lines appear....Grrrrr!.... As soon as I'm sorted I'll update here.

I thought the idea could be taken a step further with a cartoon page replacing the 3x3 grid - maybe in the future.

Very cool! This could be a fun way to present a vacation video, or most any video with various images for the different 'scenes'. My admiration of your work, Al, continues.

Thanks again !

I.ve tidied up the transitions and uploaded them again along with the xml in a self extracting zip. The previous link posted will download the new set, but for convenience here is the link

Please note that this is for the full screen transitions - not the picasa ones. I have also changed the name of the transitions for convenience to match those of the pip zoom effects I posted for use with the montage in this thread. Transitions will now appear as:

"MONTAGE 3x3......."

Please note that if anyone previously installed the old zip, this updated one will prompt you to overwrite the previous files - just allow it do so.

Thanks Al

as mentioned before , the small demo vid does little justice to the PIP fx in action. Here is a 32MB zipped up wmv if anyone is interested in checking it out.

Re: Picasa 2 montage and transitions

I've just added a post on my site that details a fairly simple method for creating a montage using free software and a special template I have created. I think it takes some beating but If anyone thinks they can do it simpler and quicker , I sure would like to know !

I've expanded upon the PIP+ zooms to include 10 now. I,ve changed the names of the FX to look more like the zoom pack titles that REHAN did using letters from A thru to I and I've also made custom icons available for the PIP+ zooms and montage transitions. All the transitions and PIP+ fx have been overhauled. I would urge anyone who has implemented the FX so far to uninstall them and download the latest from here ...sorry if this has caused inconvenience, it's been a painful experience for me. Next time I'll plan things more carefully and try to get it right first time

Thanks

Al
