side-by-side transx. while keeping videos' dimensions (avoid warping)
Posted: 11 Jul 2006 02:20 AM
I tried searching if this was addressed, didn't find it. Please help me with this transition.

I have added "Side by Side" transition. The videos are next to each other, but they are stretched/warped to fully fit the screen. How can I avoid that? I don't mind if there ends up being black space above and below each of the 2 clips (like letterbox format), but i don't know how to do that. I just don't want the image to be warped. Thanks.

(I know there's like a brady bunch effect, but the sidebyside seems really easy).

For what you describe, I think Rehan's PIP+ package would be your best bet. www.rehanfx.org.

Thanks. I already downloaded the trial version just yesterday. Would I need to buy the program itself? Shouldn't the version have that functional during this trial period? Or could it be something else, seeing that I already have the PIP+?

If you just want two static windows (no movement), that feature should be supported even after the trial period expires.

From www.rehanfx.org:
1) You've already downloaded the PIP+ module (main plug-in).
2) Download the 'PipPlus Static PIP transitions'

Now you can use the 'PIP+ Static: A B horizontal middle' transition if you want, though I think the images are a little small. I created another PIP+ Static effect based on that, but with larger windows:

Copy/paste this into Notepad and save it in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX as PIPsidebyside.xml. Restart WMM.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1034" SpecialIconResourceID="201">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Static: Side-by-Side" iconid="6">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5;" />
<Param name="RectB" value="0.0, 0.5, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5;" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

You'll have a new transition called 'PIP+ Static: Side-by-Side". It uses the icon from the #2 download above and of course needs the main plug-in from #1.

Thank you for the answer, it worked really well. Sorry about the re-posting, will refrain in the future.SmileySo the code you gave me is the one that's making it larger? It really looks nice when each clip is big like that. Thanks for making the effect!

The static examples had sizes of 37.5% of the full screen. These are exactly 50% so you can fit two side by side without gaps. That of course means you have black space 25% above and 25% below, but that is what you wanted, right?

If you look at the rectangles in the code above:
The first one is over 0%, down 25%, width of 50%, height of 50%
The second one is over 50%, down 25%, width of 50%, height of 50%

Anyway, that puts them where you want them.

Yes, absolutely. So I guess I'll still have this feature post-trial. Coolness!

I thought it may be a good transition if, for example, two characters are playing on each of the separate screens, but then later on, I can combine the 2 screens into one screen.

Could you advice me on how I could then put those two screens together? That is, how to crop/resize a video so that it would fit across the screen, on the space that the 2 indiv. screens combined occupies? The effect I want is that when the two characters have shared scenes together, I would then play that one scene into the 2 screens while maintaining the screen-size.

Have you come across a code like that? Or if you know how to write one, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Just study the PIP+ information on overlays. For what you want, you could easily create a mask covering the top 25% and lower 25% of the screen. In fact the Letterbox effect listed on Rehan's site (www.rehanfx.org) does this already, except for 12.5% and 12.5%. Change the bitmap and you'd be done.

The problem with the mask is that it would end up covering most of the screen, and cut off the top of the heads. Is there a way to shrink it to those specifications, and then maybe it would be easier to apply the mask after, without cutting off most of the people's heads?

Yes, that is the RectA parameter... But how are you going to shrink it and keep the correct aspect ratio? Or are you just going to stretch everything wide? I'm confused what you are trying to accomplish.

Yeah, sorry bout the confusion.

I'd like to keep aspect ratio. But keep height the same. So the original way i thought of it would be too complicated (I wanted the one screen to be larger than each the splits, but smaller than normal-size so that I could letterbox-it). So instead...

I guess what I'm asking for now is that there will be one screen that will be in the middle (thus it will have black space above, below and on the sides). Would you be able to give me code for that, so that this one screen that will sit middle of the horizon, is exactly like the vertical position of the split screens? You know, so that when it transitions, it does so seemlessly? Thanks.

I suggest you study and understand the RectA parameters and create a custom effect for that.

The first parameter is time, so keep that at 0.0 for a static effect.
The next two are horizontal and vertical offset which you want to be 25% of the screen height/width. (Over 25%, down 25%)
The last two are the width and height which will end up being 50% of the screen height/width.

From the transition before you had:
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5;" />

So make an effect, but change the second parameter to offset it... 25% = 0.25
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.25, 0.25, 0.5, 0.5;" />

This forum should be about learning and doing things partly for yourself otherwise it's like doing all your homework for you. Smiley Try it, but if you get stuck, post your XML and we'll see what needs to be fixed.

I tried to make a movie with four different camera views. I tried to do that by at first placing two views in de lower half of the screen:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1034" SpecialIconResourceID="201">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Static: Side-by-Side2" iconid="6">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.5, 0.49, 0.49;" />
<Param name="RectB" value="0.0, 0.51, 0.5, 0.49, 0.49;" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

The 0.51 and the 0.49 are there to make the views a little bit smaller, so a black 'border' becomes visible between the two movies. (Is there another way in XML to view a black line between two movies?) After doing this I saved this movie for later use.

Secondly, I took the other two camera views and put them together in the upper half of the screen:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1034" SpecialIconResourceID="201">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Static: Side-by-Side3" iconid="6">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.01, 0.0, 0.49, 0.49;" />
<Param name="RectB" value="0.0, 0.51, 0.0, 0.49, 0.49;" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Again, I saved the movie for later use.

Finally, I loaded both movies and tried to combine them by using this XML-file (don't mind the Dutch "Boven elkaar" :P) :

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1034" SpecialIconResourceID="201">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Static: Boven elkaar" iconid="6">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0;" />
<Param name="RectB" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0;" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

But it didn't work. The black half of one movie was placed over the other half, where the second movie should have come.

So... shouldn't I even try this anymore, because it's impossible, or is there another way?

I hope you understand my problem...:)

Just use the second transition "PIP+ Static: Side-by-Side3" for both of your 2x1 movies. Then combine them with this:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1034" SpecialIconResourceID="201">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Static: Boven elkaar" iconid="6">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0;" />
<Param name="RectB" value="0.0, 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.0;" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

The trick is to place the second set moved to the lower half.

It doesn't work, because the black half of one movie is placed above the other half...:(

Ah well, two movies should do the trick too. Two camera views less, then. :)

YES!!! I now know how to do it!! :D

Since the first set is placed over the second set, the first should be placed below! :)
