Blank screen effect
Posted: 20 Jun 2006 04:30 AM
Hi Guys

Just wondering if there is a way of blanking the video
so you can set a black screen but the audio track is
still running. Its for a video competiton idea where
the product or person needs to be blocked out from
time to time. i.e Someone interviewing a famous
person and the shot moves to this person and then
back to the interviewer. I want to keep the continuity
of the interview (audio) but blank the frames that
show the person being interviewed.
Does that make sense?

Is this possible in MM?

Is there software that will allow me to do this if
MM doesn't do this.

Any ideas?

Just import a black image (make it in MS Paint, for example). Use that on your timeline. Or create an empty title (Basic Title, black background for the font, and a single space for the text). Use these where you need them and stretch them to fit.

Although it is possible to do what Blaine has suggested, but in my experience it is extremely tricky to maintain the audio sync using this method.

OK then here is an effect that completely blacks out the clip. Although useless for any thing else but it should solve your problem in an easier way.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{EC85D8F1-1C4E-46e4-A748-7AA04E7C0496}">
<Effect name="Black Out" iconid="11" >
<Param name="FadeIn" value="0" />
<Param name="FadeColor" value="0" />
<Param name="Progress" value="1.0" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As blackout.xml extension in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

Hope it helps.

Good one, Rehan! I complete missed the point about there being audio to worry about... Using your effect a refinement would be to fade to black from the prior clip to the solid black effect, then fade from black on the later clip.

I have also used one of daniel's effects that he named TOTAL BLACK, from
his site. It was a topic several months ago and I've used it a few times...
I split the video at the beginning and at the end, and apply the black effect, and
the audio is not affected. Works pretty good too. A lot of ways to skin a cat with Movie Maker! ha ha Here is daniel's site
