Desaturation
Posted: 14 Jun 2006 03:16 PM
After checking these great forums for a desaturation effect (that works)I decided to create this xml, using the neonglow filter.

Im new to the XML code writing thing, so I hope it useful.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{E673DCF2-C316-4c6f-AA96-4E4DC6DC291E}">
<Effect name="DeSaturation" iconid="15" comment="Repeat desaturation for a gloomy/depressing tint. Created by RctFavr3">
<Param name="EffectID" value="24" />
<Param name="Control1Value" value="100" />
<Param name="Control2Value" value="100" />
<Param name="Transparency" value="75" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

I asked a question about this on the other thread - but forgot to mention thanks a bunch for this! I've been searching every nook and cranny trying to find this - thanks to you I can now head along with my grand masterplan of turning a day clip into a night clip!

This effect is not supposed to turn a day shot into a night shot.

it is suposed to remove trace amounts of color from the video/picture. The more the effect is applied, the less color in the video.
you can adjust the amount of transparency on the xml/or apply the effect multiple times to slowly drain away the color.

the only downside to this xml, is that I used the NeonGlow.xml in Funart,which means sometimes it works and other times it resembles a grayish glow.

If you desaturate a bit, and add a blue filter (im still working on the most suitable hex value for this), then you can change the atmosphere of your shot and make it appear like night-time. Of course, as soon as you get a part of the sky in your clip you're essentially nackered, and the effect will just look like a twilight shot.

Hey - I managed to do this using the desaturation effect above and the filters at www.danielfx.moo.no - check out my demo video here:

http://media.putfile.com/Night-52

Once again I must stress how vital it is that you try not to get any sky in the shot as it will not change - although getting a tiny bit of sky looks great for a twilight scene. I'm sure this can be improved on by using the light filter in Ulead, by creating a silver light (moonlight) with a blue ambient glow, but that's extra and not included on the demo video.

Hope you enjoy it, and I want to see the results of this!

i wanted to add graduale sepia tones...

to make it look warm.

can anyone do that?

just change from grayscale to sepia maybe?

For some reason it seems to slow down the video as well...is there a reason to this?

This is most likely caused by applying the filter too many times. You can change the xml trasnparancy to a lower number to give you more desaturation. If you are using Vista, there is a new desaturation effect on the forums you should look for.

If all else fails

you can remove it, and re-install it!

heres a new code: It should give you more muted colors.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{E673DCF2-C316-4c6f-AA96-4E4DC6DC291E}">
<Effect name="DeSaturation" iconid="15" comment="Desaturation for a gloomy/depressing tint. Created by RctFavr3">
<Param name="EffectID" value="24" />
<Param name="Control1Value" value="99" />
<Param name="Control2Value" value="99" />
<Param name="Transparency" value="30" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>
