I would use a screen video capture utility and record myself drawing a map or lines on a map in a drawing program like Paint.
That's the easiest way I can think of. |

If you have office 2001, you could use powerpoints advanced animation with motion paths to show a path. Or alternatively you can animate an arrow by using each slide as a "frame" and saving the presentation as a metafile (each slide is turned into a JPEG labeled 1-#) then run the frames through an animation program. Powerpoints drawing is fairly easy, i find.

Were/what is the 'screen video capture' facility? It sounds like it could come in handy!

| I know you can use the "Print Screen" command to capture an image on your screen, but I wish I knew how to capture an video. |

| It's called CamStudio and was open source freeware up until a few months ago. I just checked and noticed that it has been removed; so, unfortunately, you'll either have to hunt for it or similar software on your own, or pay for it. |

Windows Media Encoder will also do video screen capture. Available from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

Hey Avi screen classic is again another best video screen capture device, compleatly free, no spyware. It can be well used to capture a picture and as well as in video format too. Very handy and a very light software.
Download it from http://www.bobyte.com/AviScreen/Download.asp
Still there are more ways to get desired effect on WMM-2 without using any capture device. We can discuss on other possibilities if this (Avi Scree meathod) dosen't work out. |

| Hey Chris91 dude, Pumapayam is talking about capturing screen in a video format and not about transferring video from handy cam to PC. Are you able to get what I mean. (like capturing all the movement of your screen/monitor in a video format including even a movie that’s running on your computer screen or even the movement of your curser.) |

there are 2 ways,
easy way + consume more time
hard way + consume less time
-------------------------------
easy way requires you to know some basic knowledge such as
1) you need to know how to open microsoft paint (if you run on windows operating system)
step by step guide
1. open microsoft paint (start > all programs > accessories > paint)
2. open your picture file via microsoft paint
3. do some edits (example drawing red lines)
4. save it using another name with the help of numbering prefix (example: 001_AyumiParadise)
5. then do some edit, and resave it using different number (example: 002_AyumiParadise)
6. Once you got the whole lots of pictures, import them into windows movie maker
7. you can set the picture duration by (tools > options > advanced tab > picture duration)
8. then add your picture accordingly to the sequence
9. save movie (ctrl+p), if you press (ctrl+s) it means saving project = mswmm file format
----------------------------------
hard way requires you to know at least 1 screen-capture software
(example: camstudio - freeware)
step by step guide
1. google search camstudio > download it > install it
2. open camstudio > search for the hotkeys to activate screen-capture
3. open microsoft paint, open the picture file, activate screen capture,
4. use your cursor, click on a paint tool, and then draw a line from point A to point B
5. once you are done, deactivate screen capture
6. for more info on how to use camtstudio, always remember F1 is always there for you!
7. press F1 to seek help, or if it doesn't work for some reason, go to Help > Help contents
8. once you are done, import the uncompressed avi (the video which you have recorded)
9. import it into windows movie maker,
10. once you have imported it, add the video clip into the storyboard
11. do some editing such as adding music, narration and others that you feel appropriate
12. press ctrl + p to save your movie
13. once you save, use an multimedia software to view it (example windows media player 11) |

| Excellent explanation....don't forget Glynhagen's explanation up above though if you have powerpoint. You set your map as the background on the slide...and you can put an animated gif such as a car on the map....then draw the motion for the car to take across the map...various speeds etc. You can then capture the slide show of this happening....I use camtasia, but windows media encoder does a good job on something like this which doesn't have a lot of complexity. Ay, do you have Paint Shop Pro at all? By your second method above it would be the same, but in PSP you have tubes (transparent pics) which you can use to draw such a trail...thats another choice I guess. Good luck. |

I used whatever map I wanted as a background layer in photoshop.
Then after adding a dot/dash to the line I saved the image as jpeg.
Use the ACTIONS option to speed this up.
Then when I had the 10 or so jpegs
I imported them to MM2
Then I went into TOOLS, OPTIONS and set the picture duration to its lowest setting
Then I dragged all the images onto my time line.
Is there a quicker way though?
The Cam studio idea sounds good. I use Screen Virtuoso to capture real time goings on on my desk top. If there was a "hide mouse" option it would do the job nicely.

Hi stu9000, yes there is was out. You can probally use AVI Screen Classic to capture screen movement. It has an option to hide mouse movement (So in your captured movies mouse will not be there).
you can see this tutorial http://indianantiques.50g.com/movie%20maker%20tutorial/cursor.htm

Have you considered using Particle Illusion? It would let you design both a marker and a path for the marker to travel, without having to work frame by frame.
