Transparency "Progress" Value
Posted: 10 Apr 2006 02:25 PM
When restructuring, reviewing, and testing all the xml code in the XML - Persian Section of my site the other day, I was left with one small question. I've emailed Persian but she's too busy with school to respond.

In the final section of her page about Script Types > Transparency, she says if you want a 57% semi-transparency, you would use 0.57 as the "Progress" value....

But the code on the same page above that section shows that each 10% increment upwards in semi-transparancy has a corresponding 0.1 increment downwards in the progress value, not upwards.... which means a 57% semi-transparency would need a 0.43 progress value.

As it's my only outstanding question about all the work she put into the section, I'm eager to change it and call it done... but I'm not enough of an XML transitions geek to do it without a second opinion... thanks

Let me look at it...

Transparency is really a blending of the two clips going from clip A to clip B. So at Progress 0, A would be fully visible and there would be no effect from clip B. At Progress 0.10, you'd have 90% of A and 10% of B... etc. I'll look at the exact wording on the XML pages, but that's my understanding of how it works. I guess it depends on your perspective whether 0.57 means 43% of A or 57% of B.

thanks.... if she hadn't been so consistent in her wording thru the page, I'd let it slide.... but she's targeting that last section to those who want to be ultra-precise.... those people should be given the right number in the example code.

After trying out the transitions, here's more details on how the progress works:

At Progress = 0 you have:
100% of A, 0% of B. Clip B is 100% transparent or 0% opaque.
At Progress = 0.10 you have:
90% of A, 10% of B. Clip B is 90% transparent or 10% opaque.
...

So if you look at it from the perspect of the 'transparency of clip B' then the progress is inversely proportional to the transparency of clip B. But it is directly proportional to the transparency of clip A, or the opacity of clip B.

Since she is using this to overlay a 'Ghost' clip B and is concerned about the transparency, then the XML is correct. However, the description is then backwards.

If it were me I would rework the XML and change the description so it talks about the transparency of clip A, rather than clip B. Then the progress and the transparency would be in synch.

At progress 0.1, Clip A is 10% transparent.
At progress 0.2, Clip A is 20% transparent.
At progress 0.3, Clip A is 30% transparent, etc.

Also, using the Simple3D class for a simple fade seems inefficient (as Rehan has noted previously view post 5325)

I would use the standard Fade transition frozen at the desired spot:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{16B280C5-EE70-11D1-9066-00C04FD9189D}">
<Transition name="Translucent 10%" iconid="12" comment="DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Fade" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.10" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 20%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.20" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 30%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.30" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 40%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.40" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 50%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.50" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 60%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.60" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 70%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.70" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 80%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.80" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Translucent 90%" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Progress" value="0.90" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

And my last word on the subject is that once you have 9 levels of translucency/transparency, are you really going to need to define one specifically at 57% anyway? Will it be that different from 60%?

yes... 3% different.... which was Persian's comment for those wanting to be that precise...

I'm getting more confused... when I open MM2 with the XML code, I have 9 choices of transitions... for 10% to 90% transparent. The transparency setting is the same throughout the transition, with nothing to do with how far along the transition is in its playing.... it seems the progress setting is what defines the transparency level. It's the only setting that changes from one to the next, and the transparency changes with it.

Maybe developments since Persian wrote this part make for easier ways to do it. At this point I just want to have what is being said technically correct.

No offense to PPG, but the method used must have come originally from that old post I mentioned, by coolaworld. In order to use the Simple3D class, all the parameters listed are necessary to set up the fade from start point 0, with no scaling, etc. It is the same for each one, except for the progress value.

Again, this is rather inefficient and can be accomplished much more simply using the code above. Call them 'Semi-Transparency' instead of 'Translucent' if you like, but they are all the same thing.

You wouldn't even need to change the clip, because no one would know if it was clip A or B that included the person. You would just need to change the description to say put your clip with the person or object first and then the clip without the person or object second.
