Fade Through Black
Posted: 11 Mar 2006 02:15 PM
In a previous thread: view post 46526 people moaned about the difficulty to achieve a fade to black and then back to new clip (see this sample). I thought it would be best to be able to do all the steps in a single Transition... So here it is:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{16B280C5-EE70-11D1-9066-00C04FD9189D}">
<Transition name="Fade Through Black" iconid="12" >
<Param name="Overlap" value="0.0" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As fadeblack.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

Hope you like it.

PS. Btw it could be done by PIP+ in a better way, allowing control on background color. But this one is without it so only black background is possible.

Thanks for that Blaine, I have a question about the default effect id parameters... It seems some are missing if you look at the list in that article...

I'm not sure what 'effect id' parameters you are referring to. EffectID is an internal number used for the built-in items, but shouldn't be present in a custom effect or transition.

Ah, I see the confusion. You are talking about the Filter Effects also called the 'ArtEffects'. If you check the GUID {E673DCF2-C316-4c6f-AA96-4E4DC6DC291E} you'll see it refers to DXImageTransform.Microsoft.NDFXArtEffects.

Fade is completely different animal. It is either an effect
{EC85D8F1-1C4E-46E4-A748-7AA04E7C0496} DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MovieMaker.Fade
or a transition
{16B280C5-EE70-11D1-9066-00C04FD9189D}
DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Fade

The basic Fade transition, which is what Rehan used above, was originally intended as a way to transition between pages in IE, so it isn't shown as part of Movie Maker. I know it is called an IE 'Filter' which is why you probably confused it with the 'Filter Effects', but they aren't related at all.

You can read more about these IE Visual Filters here. The cool thing is a lot of them can be used in Windows Movie Maker to transition between video clips. You'll even notice some familiar ones like Chroma, Compositor and more.

Oh I see.... Thanks for clarifying.... But how do I get some of those numbers to work (the ones that dont) in the Art Effect xml that Persian Poet Gal posted they weren't in there...

Experimentation? Unfortunately I've not found any documentation on what the ControlValue1 to ControlValue8 settings are for any of these Art Effects. Others have figured things out by plugging in values, and I've tried asking Microsoft for more information to no avail.

I say, just try creating custom Art Effects with these numbers and then try varying ControlValue1, to see what it does (or doesn't) do. Then try #2, #3, etc. If you come up with any interesting combinations, let us know.

It's also possible that the later numbers don't do anything and perhaps that is why they were left out of the group that Ruzz made... but perhaps you will be the one to discover something new!

Ok I did some experimenting the other day because like you I couldn't find any article on what the control numbers do... But everytime the preview was just a black screen...

yeah, I just tried a few more numbers and it's still black, even if I don't add any Control parameters it's still black...
