Changing file types.
Posted: 07 Mar 2006 12:14 PM
I know how to get videos from Youtube and google video, but they're both in weird file types that I can't use in Windows Movie Maker. Youtube videos are .FLV and google videos are .GVP. Anyone know how to convert those to files I could use in WMM?
Thanks.

.gvp = Google Video Pointer. Requires Google video Player... licensing/copyright issues.

.flv = Flash Video File. Use the RivaFLVencoder. It's freeware... should help you out.

Thanks for the reply.

So I'm not going to be able to convert .gvp files to use in my movie?

And I tried using Riva to convert my .flv videos into .wmv, but it kept messing up. It has an error before it's done converting and only converts part of the video.
And the part of the video it converts is kinda messed up. Small squares kinda show up periodically and make it hard to see the video.

I used Riva and converted a flash file into a mpg, but the quality was really bad, so I tried turning it into a wmv and the video doesn't work on it. I only see black. Any suggestions?
The website says it doesn't support wmv 9, but what does that mean? How do I know which wmv I'm turning it into?

If Riva doesn't work, you might try RAD video tools. There are more details at www.papajohn.org > Import Movie Source Files > Video > MOV.

How do you download videos from Youtube? Also, I want to convert my gvp's, too! Oh, and how do you convert a RAM video file to an avi?

I found a way to convert gvp files
you must download the Google player
if you start the gvp file in the google player it save the file as a gvi file
in "c:\own files\own videos\Google videos"
and the gvi files can be convert with "Naevius GVI converter"
that converter gives you avi files so you can burn it without any problems

freewaydog - Unfortunately, vixy.net doesn't convert files to a format that is compatible with Movie Maker. However, Media Converter does download and convert Youtube videos to a Movie Maker friendly format (wmv or avi).

If I recall correctly, it uses DivX to encode avi files and this is one of the known codecs to cause problems in Movie Maker.
