The Letterboxer - convert 16:9 video into 4:3 letterbox.
Posted: 28 Feb 2006 02:34 PM
Hello,

I had a project shot and edited in WMM in 16:9 aspect ratio, but when I uploaded to sites like iFilm and YouTube, or when I exported to DV and played it on a regular TV, it came out squished so everything was all tall and skinny. I couldn't find a simple fix for this, and it seems like lots of other people had the problem too, so I made a short xml title effect that works great.

There's a site for downloading it with complete instructions at http://www.arcacy.com/letterboxer. It's very simple and it works. Hope this is helpful!

Thanks,
Steve

So, is the final video still squished horizontally, only now squished with black bars?

If you want a free and easy way to convert 16:9 video to 4:3 video with black bars,
try this:

1. Get VirtualDub. It will import formats such as AVI and MPEG-2.

2. Click Video | Filters | Add... | Resize. Even though this filter is called
'resize', you can also use it to 'pad'.

- Check 'Expand frame and letterbox image' and type in the new size (new width, height,
frame width, frame height).
It should be easy to figure out if you play around with it.

- Leave 'filter mode' alone at 'nearest neighbor'. You're just padding and the
quality should not change at all.

3. Save the video out as AVI. It might be quite large if uncompressed (GBs), but
that's ok for me.

4. Import this AVI into Movie Maker. Do whatever and then export it out as WMV.

Hey,

Nope, it's not squished at all. If you have a movie in 16:9 and you upload it to a site like YouTube, it just gets displayed as 4:3, which means everyone is tall and skinny. What my Letterboxer does is just make the video appear in a small 16:9 window on the 4:3 screen, with the black bars on the top and bottom.

For instance, let's say you have a 16:9 video that's 1600 pixels wide by 900 pixels tall. If you post that to a 4:3 site or save the movie in 4:3, you end up with all of the information crammed into a box that's 1200 pixels wide by 900 pixels tall, so everything is squished horizontally. What the letterboxer would do is create a 16:9 "window" in the middle, which in our example would be 1200 pixels wide by 675 tall, and black bars to fill up the rest of the space.

Oh ok, I didn't look at the file closely enough, I though you were just slapping
black bars on it. You're actually resizing the video using a custom title which is cool. :)

Thanks for this - it works great! I was looking for a quick & easy way to make things not look squished on YouTube & similar, and this is perfect!

Anyway movie maker 2 does that.
Click tools > Options and there is an ASPECT RATIO option. It says 4:3 and 16:9 just select Whatever u want and movie maker 2 does it automatic.

Life is good.

The problem is if you save in 16:9 ratio out of WMM, then when you play it on YouTube and certain other sites, they don't keep the 16:9 aspect ratio. They blindly assume that all video will be sent in 4:3 aspect ratio, I suspect.

The solution given here is a great one, which essentially imports your 16:9 video, puts in the letterboxes, so you can save it back out as 4:3 video for display on YouTube and other sites.

The better solution would be for those sites to correctly display widescreen video and then your tip of setting aspect ratio to 16:9 would be the way to go.
