Border between split screen transition
Posted: 25 Feb 2006 08:21 PM
I was wondering if anyone knew how to get a border on the split screen transition. I'm sorry if this has already been explained before but I couldn't find it.

You can use an overlay as a border.

If you are using Rehan's split transitions then you can easily modify them (or create new ones) to add a border using parameters such as BorderWidth, BorderColour, BorderSoftness - see the SMPTE Wipe Transition

Rehan's pack contains the "SPLIT: Heart Border" transition as an example.

As another example, if you just want a thin white line with the "SPLIT: vertical" transition

<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="15" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="16777215" />
</Transition>

thanks for the help!! I'm using the side by side transition that considerate guy put together. I don't think it's one of rehan's transitions. I went to the SMPTE Wipe Transition site and i still cant really figure out how to put up the border between the clips.

here is a sample:

1. notepad, copy to addon as xml extention
2 open wmm and import vid 1, import vid 2
3 go to tranition. look carefuy for split screen white border be under S as it is named
""""<Transition name="SPLIT: Vertical white border" iconid="41"> """"
you can change it to something you may recognise easier.

4. now if you found it you drag to timeline into the vid of the second vid2
5 and drag vid 2 to vid 1 just b4 it dissappears.
6 then save movie, open up the saved movie ,drag back in and trim. finished
I rushed mineto show its can be done..

<Param name="BorderWidth" value="2" />

<Param name="BorderColor" value="16778943" />
blue 2 inch:

okay I fooled aroundwith my first tranition xml hip hip I placedafew numbers different and gota blue 2 inch line. so all you need to do is figure what every singlecharacter of 16778943 stands for. and you can get your colours, boarder width is simple 1 is an inch 2 is a lil bigger .

The color value can be in hex... so the color white is 0xFFFFFF:

<Param name="BorderColor" value="0xFFFFFF" />

Each color channel varies from 0 to FF (255 in decimal). Use the hex values specified on this page for popular colors. Just note that rather than using #RRGGBB format you have to use 0xRRGGBB format.

thanks for all the repliies!! I added the white border and it was okay but it cut off a little bit of the video. i was wondering if i could just have a thin black line divide the clips. I looked at the stuff Rehan posted on color, but when i changed it to the code for black nothing happened. Any suggestions?? and once again thanx for all the help!!

Andie it is always a good idea to post exactly what you did and explain what were you expecting that didnt happen?

Here are the four splits with black border:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{DE75D012-7A65-11D2-8CEA-00A0C9441E20}">
<Transition name="SPLIT BORDER: Vertical" iconid="41">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0x000000" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT BORDER: Horizontal" iconid="40">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="2" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0x000000" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT BORDER: Center, Vertical" iconid="50">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="21" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0x000000" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="SPLIT BORDER: Center, Horizontal" iconid="22">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="22" />
<Param name="BorderColor" value="0x000000" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Instructions:As usual copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As splitborder.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

This is the xml i was using to get the split screen effect.... (it's the side by side that considerate guy posted)

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{F088DE73-BDD0-4E3C-81F8-6D32F4FE9D28}" >
<Transition name="Side by Side" iconid="41" comment="DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Stretch">
<Param name="stretchStyle" value="PUSH" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

I used used the vertical split border that rehan posted and it's great, but i noticed that it cut off a little bit of the video. I tried to add this

<Param name="BorderColor" value="0x000000" />
<Param name="BorderWidth" value="1" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />

to the side by side but nothing happened. is there a way to modify the split vertical border so it doesn't cut off some of the movie, or is that just the way it splits??

On thing you could do is use a scaling effect (previously posted by Rehan) to slightly shrink both your left and right video, then apply the 'Side by Side' transition.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Scale 0.95" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.95" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.95" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy this code to Notepad, save it as C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\Scale.xml. Restart WMM and you should have a new 'Scale 0.95' effect that will effectively leave a small border on all sides of your video. You can modify the values as needed to shrink the video more or less. It's currently set to 95% of the original size.

thanks for the help everyone. Blaine, when i used the scaling effect and placed it on both clips, lines ran through the clips. With the scaling effect can you only change the size of one clip, or did i do something wrong??

I personally haven't tried it, but perhaps the combination of effects with transitions is too much for WMM. Does it look like this even after you save your movie? It might just be the preview?

If it has problems even in the final movie, you might do this in a couple passes. Take your original video and apply the scaling effect first to everything. Save it as a separate movie. Now reimport the scaled/framed video and apply the border and other transitions.
