Build 5308... is downloading now

this build is the first one with all the Vista features.... not yet beta quality but it's the full glimpse into what's coming.
it's a 2.8 GB download so it'll be tomorrow before I have it installed.... |

the overnight download is done... an iso file of 2.8 GB to now make into an installation DVD... the next step. Here's the file name Blaine:

... and now I have my installation DVD disc... and the installation is underway using it, wiping clean my previous install and going forward from scratch.
Nice timing... the press release from Roxio this morning... announcing the release of MyDVD 8 Premier... I'll be getting that too... |

the story ends now... sorry to say that nothing exciting happened during the install... unless Eastern time being 3 hours different on my Vista system versus what it is on my other systems is a big thing.
the install went easier than the last one... had to add my sound card driver manually, as I had to do before. This time I was ready for it.

| 5308 runs a lot better on my test machine, but I havent had time to play with it much... Check MSDN downloads I believe it's there now too. |

| yes CG, the DVD app is still 'Windows DVD Maker'.... it's a stand-alone app but in the Movie Maker folder. You can open it directly, or via the menu in Movie Maker when publishing a project. |

Yes, and the good news is that Windows DVD Maker should actually be functional in build 5308 (unlike previous builds :-))

Hi Dean....
yup, it appears to be functional, but so far it tells me I don't have a recordable DVD in the driver, regardless of the type I put in (DVD-R or DVD-RW)...
it's a system that I never used to burn a DVD, so maybe there's more setup I need to do.... |

If you have a burnable drive and put in an RW disc then Vista should pop up an auto-play dialog with options to format the disc or burn a disc using Windows DVD Maker. If you don't see that dialog box then for some reason Vista doesn't appear to think you've got a DVD burner or writeable disc and it obviously won't work with DVD Maker either. I'm assuming your drives supports the -RW format and it isn't an older drive that only support +RW?

it's a combo CD/DVD writer... and the popup with the blank DVD-RW disc seems to consider it a CD rather than a DVD. |

| How about that... find the pack of stuff that came with the computer 2 years ago, and one of the things was a sample blank DVD.... a DVD+R one... put it in the drive and Windows DVD Maker is happy. |

We require a disc because we need to know how big to show the pie gauge showing you how much content will fit. This will vary depending upon if you have one of those small DVD's, single layer DVD, dual layer DVD's etc. Also if you're going into DVD Maker you're probably going to want to burn a DVD, so it seems likely that you'll have one around. I know it's a little bit of an exception at this stage though when you just want to try it out.

thanks... I figured that might be the case... at least it keeps you from doing lots of work and then finding it won't fit.
but all I'm doing is browsing around, taking screen shots, updating my website, writing a book, etc.... I don't want a DVD.... :)

| .... I'm impressed with seeing about 80 dropped frames when I imported 35 minutes of footage from my camcorder.... I had tried so hard to make it drop frames before that I was afraid the feature wasn't working. Getting some to drop today was easy. |
