colour effects

For those of you who want a bit of fun but don't understand XML (i am by no means an expert) the XML snippet below contains the code to create your own colour effects in Movie maker. To use it cut between the "begin cut" and "end cut" lines below and paste it into a notepad file which you then save as as a file with an .XML extension eg myeffects.xml in a folder called AddonTFX (This has to be in the locale ID folder in the folder where movie maker is installed) in my case the full path is:

C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\1033\AddonTFX

The 1033 folder is the locale ID, 1033 is english so if you are running a non-english version the number may be different. Also you may have to create the AddonTFX folder.

The code contains seven effects in total, two for each primary colour (red,green,blue) as in the example for green below:

<Effect name="greengreyscale" iconid="25" comment="green and greyscale">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Standard" />
<Param name="Desaturate" value="true" />
<Param name="Green" value="-0.5" />
</Effect>

Where the name is e.g. greengreyscale as in the example the effect will set all colours except the one in the name to a shade of grey, this is done by setting the Desaturate parameter to True. Where the effect name contains fullcolour, Desaturate is set to False the other colours are left alone.

To change the value for a colour change the the value="-0.5" parameter to a number between "-1.0" and "1.0" where "0.0" is the normal setting, a negative number less colour and a positive number more colour (this is the nearest i can get to the correct optical jargon). The values must always be in quotes, and i think with 1 decimal place.

The seventh effect has entries for all three colours with desaturate set to false.

To create your own effect you can either alter the values in an existing entry or copy an entry and paste it on a new line after a </Effect> tag. To give it a new name change the name="xxxxx" to the new name and save the file. You have to restart movie maker before the effect appears in the list.

A word of warning about XML, it is a pig, if you make the slightest mistake and miss out a tag or put a parameter in the wrong place it just wont appear in your effects list. no errors, no warnings, just no custom effects.

There is an article on the microsoft knowledge, and i am sure there is a link to it somewhere in the forum, that explains all XML tags and settings in tedious detail. I have also played with the speed up and slow down effects with some success but have not been able to create custom aging effects yet.

If any one else has created their own effects why not share them here?
