Movie in Move effect -- sort of
Posted: 12 May 2004 11:14 AM
I am sure everybody knows how to increase the transition time for a transition? For those who dont: its dead simple: First in Storyboard, put a transition between two clips, then in Timeline mode select the second clip and drag it left over the first one. You will see a blue gradient slope which shows how much time the transition will take from start to complete.

Anyway, the trick I am suggesting is not that but uses it to achieve a Movie in Movie effect. The xml below is a Transition named Movie in Movie. All it does it shows the first clip in small size over the second clip. But if you increase the transition time using above trick so that the second clip completely overlaps the first, you will get a movie in a movie effect.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition name="Movie in Movie" iconid="71" comment="Movie in movie effect">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Now play with it changing several parameters For example using different values of InitialScaleA and ScaleA parameters will make the first clip change size. Similarly setting a value of less than 1.0 for FadeStartA would make the first clip start fading from that fraction of transition time (0 = start, 1 = end).

Enjoy.

That is a real nice tip :)

The problem I have with these custom effects is that I don't know how or what to do with the above code.

I suppose I copy it and save it as something.xml. But how do I go about importing or using the xml with Windows Movie Maker 2?

I presume this is very basic since it's not covered in many places or I must have just missed it while reading everywhere.

I'm in no hurry for a response, but if someone could post a link or a very lame-man's How to guide, I would love to try learning some weekend.

Many Thanks

Chad :)

Yes you are on the right track. Basically save the above code as something.xml and place that file in the folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\. If the folder does not exist there, just create the folder named AddOnTFX under Shared.

Note, there is some confusion about the exact location of the AddOnTFX folder but it defitiely works under the above folder (Shared). For some people it had also worked at other locations. Post back your experience.

Excellent Script, thanks for posting.

OK people,

On popular demand here is the "PIP in a corner" set of effects:

<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">

<Transition name="PIP, top left" iconid="17">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left, up" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.35" />
</Transition>

<Transition name="PIP, top right" iconid="17">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="right, up" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.35" />
</Transition>

<Transition name="PIP, bottom left" iconid="17">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left, down" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.35" />
</Transition>

<Transition name="PIP, bottom right" iconid="17">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.25" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="right, down" />
<Param name="FadeStartA" value="1.0" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.35" />
</Transition>

</TransitionDLL>

Sorry rehan, have you retracted that group of pip's? The file appears to not be there anymore.

Thanks
