The standard effects and transitions are stored internal to WMM, but if you go to the article on Creating Custom Transitions and Effects it has snippets from the file.

For example, they show:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition nameID="62800" iconid="91" comment="Flip, right">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RevolveCamera" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowAFront" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowABack" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBFront" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBBack" value="true" />
</Transition>
...
</TransitionDLL>
...
</Transitions>
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect nameID="62863" iconid="25" comment="Sepia tone">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Standard" />
<Param name="Desaturate" value="true" />
<Param name="Red" value="0.10" />
<Param name="Magenta" value="0.09" />
<Param name="Yellow" value="0.25" />
<Param name="contrast" value="1.0" />
</Effect>
...
</EffectDLL>
...
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

If you wanted to play with these two effects, you would need to edit them a little bit to look like this:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition name="@My Flip, right" iconid="91" comment="Flip, right">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RevolveCamera" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowAFront" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowABack" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBFront" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBBack" value="true" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="@My Sepia tone" iconid="25" comment="Sepia tone">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Standard" />
<Param name="Desaturate" value="true" />
<Param name="Red" value="0.10" />
<Param name="Magenta" value="0.09" />
<Param name="Yellow" value="0.25" />
<Param name="contrast" value="1.0" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

I took out the ellipsis marks (...) and also changed the nameID to a name. I gave each effect a name starting with @My to help distinguish them from the original versions. If you save this XML file in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX (say as mytest.xml, then restart WMM, you should see your version of the Flip, Right transition and the Sepia Tone effect.

If you look further down that web page, you'll see other snippets. Most often they leave off the necessary tags to group them into Transitions or Effects.

Here's an empty .xml file:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
...
</Transitions>
<Effects>
...
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Take those snippets, paste them in to the correct block (Transitions or Effects) above, change the nameID to a name parameter, and save it as an .xml file.

If you can give me the name of a specific effect or transition that you want to play with, I can help you form the appropriate file, if the instructions above are unclear.

Re: MM2 effects and trasitions

How about starting with something fun like this:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition name="@My Shatter Test" iconid="76" comment="Shatter, in">
<Param name="InternalName" value="ParticleSystem" />
<Param name="ScatterDirection" value="in" />
<Param name="MaxParticles" value="600" />
<Param name="SpinDirection" value="right" />
<Param name="ParticleSpeed" value="40.0" />
<Param name="ParticleSpinSpeed" value="0.5" />
<Param name="ExponentialProgressDuration" value="0.9" />
<Param name="ExponentialProgressScale" value="0.25" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Save this as C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\myshatter.xml

Then play with these parameters:
ScatterDirection default=none choices=left, right, up, down, in, out
Direction in which pieces of the first video will move, where "in" means away from the viewer, and "out" means toward the viewer. You may choose more than one direction, so "up, left" makes the pieces move to the upper left of the screen.

ParticleSpeed default="1.0" choices non-negative
The speed at which the pieces move.

SpinDirection default=none choices=left, right, up, down, in, out
Direction in which the pieces of the first video will rotate, where "in" means toward the screen and "out" means away from the screen. Choose only one direction.

ParticleSpinSpeed default="1.0" choices non-negative
How fast the particles spin.

MaxParticles default="100" choices 3 to 1000
Maximum number of particles in the scene.

Gravity default="0.0" choices 0 to infinity
Vertical acceleration of the particles.

RandomizeSpeed default="1.0" choices any number
Randomization multiplier. Set to 0 (zero) to make the speed uniform for all particles.

BothDirections default="false" choices true or false
If true, particles will move in both directions with equal probability.

Come on, you won't know what you can accomplish until you try! Big Smile

Oh, here are descriptions of the other parameters used in the transition:
ExponentialProgressDuration default=0.0 choices 0.0 to 1.0
Length of time, starting from 0.0, during which progress will happen on a logarithmic scale. Progress is linear after that time.

ExponentialProgressScale default=0.3 choices 0.0 to infinity
Scale of the exponential progress. The equation is: LogrithmicScale = -log(1.0 - LinearProgress ) * ExponentialProgressScale.

Leave the numbers as is, or go ahead and try some different ones. Don't worry about messing up WMM... worst case you can delete the .xml file and it will stop getting loaded when WMM starts up.

That looks good! You're getting the hang of it!

Regarding the Bars transition, or any that you are going to try to grab from that page, you need to replace the nameID with a name. The number (nameID) is used internally to identify the transition. If you are creating a variation on it, you need to remove the nameID and replace it with a name and then what you want to call it. All custom transitions and effects should have name instead of nameID.

In other words:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{2E7700B7-27C4-437F-9FBF-1E8BE2817566}">
<Transition name="@My Bars Transition" iconid="37" comment="Bars"/>
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Unfortunately, this transition, that you have picked, takes no parameters, so there is no way to modify it further... Look through the list and find ones that take parameters that you can modify.

Re: MM2 effects and trasitions

Correction on the last post, there should not be a / at the end of the line that starts <Transition name... It has to pair up with the </Transition> tag later on, and therefore shouldn't have the /> at the end.

Another correction that I discovered while answering trexmatt's question...

trexmatt,

If you look in that document, you'll see a section entitled: Effect and Transition Objects Provided by Windows Movie Maker. There it shows the GUIDs used by Movie Maker for its standard transitions and effects.

If you look to 'Bars' you'll see it shows a GUID of {2E7700B7-27C4-437F-9FBF-1E8BE2817566}. That's probably all you need to start playing with the modifying the standard transitions and effects.

However, if you want to go a step farther and look in the registry on your computer, when you search for this GUID string, you should find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2E7700B7-27C4-437F-9FBF-1E8BE2817566}. Under there it has ProgID that has a value of "DXImageTransform.Microsoft.RandomBars.1". I searched www.microsoft.com for "DXImageTransform.Microsoft.RandomBars" and found the following page:
RandomBars Filter

Lo and behold, if you look there you'll see that there is actually a parameter that we can modify. If you go to the 'Show Me' button, you can play with the orientation parameter. Hey, we can do vertical bars!

Let's try that:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{2E7700B7-27C4-437F-9FBF-1E8BE2817566}">
<Transition name="@My Vertical Bars Transition" iconid="37" comment="Vertical Bars">
<Param name="orientation" value="Vertical"/>
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Another one for atrglock to play with:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition name="@My Simple3D Test" iconid="91" comment="Flip, right">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RevolveCamera" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowAFront" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowABack" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBFront" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBBack" value="true" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Go to the page on Custom Transitions and Effects and look under Simple3D for the parameters you can add or modify.

Click the link in that post (the Microsoft document on custom transitions and effects), and scroll down until you find 'Simple3D Class Parameters'... it is in the section on WMTFX Transitions and Effects, so if you click that link and scroll just a little bit more you'll see MoveA, MoveSpeedA, RotateA, etc. Or just open the page and then do Edit > Find for the phrase 'Simple3D'.

Okay, let's go slower this time:

1) Copy this code and save it as C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\my3dtest.xml
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C63344D8-70D3-4032-9B32-7A3CAD5091A5}">
<Transition name="@My Simple3D Test" iconid="91" comment="Flip, right">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="RevolveCamera" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowAFront" value="true" />
<Param name="ShowABack" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBFront" value="false" />
<Param name="ShowBBack" value="true" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Next open the Microsoft document on creating custom transitions and effects

From Internet Explorer, choose 'Edit' > 'Find on this page' (Ctrl+F).
Type 'Simple3D' and then click 'Next' about 7 times until you find the section on 'Simple3D Class' parameters. Those are the ones you want to play with...
