Brightness Pulse
Posted: 13 Oct 2005 05:31 PM
Can somebody create an effect that cause a brighness pulse every few seconds? I am thinking something like the effect from "Predator" when the alien scans. The color change effect I am using I found of the site. The pulse I am finding difficult. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Something like this?

strobe

I am thinking you may want it a bit more random,
and that might be a problem.

It might work. Is it possible to slow down the strobe effect?

The problem with slowing down this strobe effect is that
it would slow down everything. The white parts would last longer.
This is really the flicker effect used in combination with chroma black.
When you slow down flicker...the black parts last longer. And the
Black parts are what become the bright parts later.

The only other way I could think of is a PIP+ effect that would
have a white background show through randomly.
If you have PIP+...I can make something like that.

Ok...so this PIP+ effect works, but maybe not as well.
And if you have a long clip, you would need to recode the XML
to add more flashes. This version only has 4.

dlk can this effect be used even after the pip+ trial runs out?
and can you post the xml to the effect that you used in the vid?
(assuming these are two different xml codes!)

thanks

Malina,
Yes, they are 2 different processes and no, I don't think
the PIP+ effect will work with the free version(based on
what Rehan said about a different effect I made that
altered the alpha parameter) So, back to the first method.
I posted this once before, so this is nothing new.

I say method because this uses the flicker effect, brightness
increase and chroma black transition. The good news is that
for the most part, you can do this in one pass(but you may need a clean up pass)

So, drag your clip to the storyboard twice. Apply one of the
flicker effects to the 2nd clip(ficker or flicker slow is your best bet IMO)
Then apply brightness increase about 4 times to the 2nd clip.
Order of the effects matters, because you want the brightness
effects to be handled first, and flicker to be the last effect done.
Flicker generates black brames, and you don't want the brightness
increased on the black frames. Now you have the original clip,
and a bright clip that flickers. Now use the chroma black transition
between the 2, and the black will be replaced with the parts from
the untouched clip. Overlap as much as possible... but the fact
that you can't overlap perfectly doesn't really hurt the effect in this
case, because the eye won't be able focus on smooth movement.

Here are a couple of flicker effects in case you don't have them.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{ADEADEB8-E54B-11d1-9A72-0000F875EADE}">
<Effect name="flicker" iconid="31" comment="flicker">
<Param name="FlickerFrequency" value="1" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="flicker slow" iconid="31" comment="flicker">
<Param name="FlickerFrequency" value="1" />
<Param name="FrameSkips" value="2" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="flicker slower" iconid="31" comment="flicker">
<Param name="FlickerFrequency" value="1" />
<Param name="FrameSkips" value="4" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="flicker slowest" iconid="31" comment="flicker">
<Param name="FlickerFrequency" value="1" />
<Param name="FrameSkips" value="10" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

chroma black has been done a hundred times

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C5B19592-145E-11D3-9F04-006008039E37}" >
<Transition name="ChromaBlack" iconid="11">
<Param name="KeyType" value="0" />
<Param name="RGB" value="0" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>
