34 Transitions
Posted: 07 Oct 2005 03:41 PM
I made 34 transitions for Movie Maker. Some of them have been done before, but I think some of them are new. My favorites are Stretch, Right; Stripes; Wheel, 20 Spokes; and Square, clockwise top-right. What are your favorites? There may be bugs in some of these transitions, if you find one feel free to fix it and the post it here. Also, a few of the icons are wrong as well.

That's what all those extra icons were for! Good job in tracking them down and putting them all in a file. My favorites are 'Push, right and left' and 'Swap'.

Oh, I also like Stripes and Wheel, 20 Spokes. I tried them all and saw no "bugs". Every one seemed to work fine. The 'Push, left' icon isn't exactly like the effect, but it is the best of the standard ones that are defined. Otherwise, as Rehan noted, I'd say the effects and icons are "bang on".

I would make my own icons but I don't have visual studio and haven't found a free solution yet. Does anyone know a way to do this?

As mentioned by glow some time ago, you can use Resource Hacker to replace the bitmaps in an already made DLL and save as new name.

Indeed I've uninstalled Visual Studio (freeing up a gig or two) and just get by with IrfanView and Resource Hacker to make the icons.
Here's the original post where I described how to replace bitmaps and mentioned those unused icons related to SMPTE wipes.

Wow! Those were amazing! My favorites are swap and square. I'm just repeating what others have said, but it's amazing how the icons matched so perfectly.

I agree....these are fantastic. I have tons of transitions, but these are among the best. And some of the individual ones are the BEST....that swap and square are terrific. I just copied these to the shared file, and put a bunch of pictures on the timeline and looked up each name and put it in.....threw on a song, and holy cow!
Thanks for the new transitions that will add to making better and fresher movies!!

1)You copyed and pasted the xml into notepad and saved it as transitions.xml
2)Saved it in the AddOnTFX folder
3)Restarted movie maker and opened the transition folder.

Kylefighter1....

Re-check (maybe even re copy and paste, save) the actual xml code to make sure you grabbed everything in the copy step to notepad. Several times I have found that I missed copying a line or even just a carot mark ('<' or '>'). The xml code is very exacting...it must be exactly as the code is written or it won't show/work in MM.

Example:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>

<TransitionDLL guid="{DE75D012-7A65-11D2-8CEA-00A0C9441E20}" comment="SMPTE wipes">
<Transition name="Arrow Head, down" iconid="1">
<Param name="MaskNum" value="109" />
<Param name="BorderSoftness" value="5" />
</Transition>

</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

If you copied the sample transition as the above and omitted the red text ('<'), it would not work....b/c the initial carot('<') would have been absent.

Basically just recheck to make sure you got ALL of the xml coding.
Hope this is helpful and solves your issue.
Kavu

Hope you can help me get started. Thanks. Smash46

Hi,
Earlier today I was able to copy code for a title overlay to show in the lower left hand corner of the picture. The insturction included pasting the code into notepad and saving it with a specific name and the .xml extension.
I am confused here. Do I copy all the code or each transition separately?
Is there a specific name for each or a blanket name for the whole file/collection. I'd really like to try these and I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance. Smash46

1.-Copy the WHOLE thing just like it appears
2.-Open NotePad and paste the WHOLE thing, not modify
3.-Click SaveAs
4.-Search for C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX
5.-Save it as "something.xml"
6.-Open Windows movie maker to see if the new transitions appeared

Notes: If you don't have AddOnTFX folder you must create it before... it's important to save it as ".xml"... if your computer isn't in english (like mine) you must search where is Movie Maker's folder located... I hope this helpSmiley

First I was dissapointed of Moviemaker, but now i've discovered thousands of things I'm impressed! Sorry if I have spelling/grammar mistakes... I'm spanish speaking
