Video Effect Request (+ Questions) - Scale/Crop Like
Posted: 21 Sep 2005 04:31 PM
This site is wonderful. The experts here have been very helpful, thank you so much. However, I do have another request and a couple questions I would really like help with.

My request is something I am not too sure that WMM is even capable of doing. I am wondering if it is possible to create black bars on the outside of a clip (small, maybe 5-10px) without actually cutting into the clip. Perhaps a scale effect to maybe 98% and then horizontally centering the clip? But then when I re-import the clip to work on it some more I don't want to have to worry about the clip stretching out to the full length of the work area. Any suggestions or ideas?

Now, the question. I work on movies or "montages" some call them. Buddies and people I don't know capture footage from video games, movies, etc. through a capture card on the TV. Some footage has better quality than others depending on the capture card. However, on my current project, it seems as if when I import a clip of my buddies, edit it with a simple effect, and then export it I lose quality -- and quite a bit in some cases. All the clips are 320x240 when I import them and then they are exported at 320x240 and 2.1MBPS. Is there something I could do to not lose quality or is it perhaps dependant on certain aspects of my computer?

Anyway, thanks to anyone in advance who helps me. You guys are fantastic and very friendly. I am very glad I found this site.

Are you looking for black bars top and bottom, left and right or both?

Just the left and the right, I already have custom top and bottom bars made.

Also, real quick, is it possible to combine title overlays? It seems the quality issue occurs because I have to apply a title overlay, export, import, apply another title overlay, export, apply another title overlay, export, and then import for the actual project.

I tried something out with Pip Plus which you're going to need for this xml ;). I have both an overlay version and another that resizes it to that scale you could also use them seperately or together (here's the image you would need for the overlay version just right click and save the picture as letterboxrl.png in your "AddOnTFX" folder):

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1033" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP Plus Effect: Letterbox Left and Right" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value=" 0.0, 0.0,0.0,1.0,1.0" />
<Param name="BorderA" value="C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\letterboxrl.png" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1033" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP Plus Effect - Letterboxrl Proportion" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value=" 0.00, 0.09,0.0,0.82,1.0" />
<Param name="Background" value="0x000000" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

If you need help implementing these codes just go to the link in my signature and go to chapter one for visual and written walkthrough of the xml programming process ;).

Silen7, just a simple rescale of 0.95 would give you black bars on all sides while keeping the aspect ratio preserved:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Scale 0.75" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value="0.75" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value="0.75" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As scale.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

That is just about what I needed. I had to modify some numbers, but overall it was right on the money. Thank you so much!

The one thing I'm still working with on it though is the darkness of the borders. I'm trying to make it the same black as the top borders (or vise versa), but I can't seem to get it to work. Any suggestions on that?

I also have another question, quite easy I think, if you don't mind.

In the top border, I am including small titles. However, with the half-screen black censor that I request for, I cannot seem to get the title to the top -- on the middle and the bottom. Any suggestions on how I can fix that?

Nevermind, found a solution for the titles problem. Only problem now is the blackness of the borders issue.

Bah, nevermind, the title issue came back up when I started applying effects to the bottom screen clips. Is there anyway of just keeping the titles constant?

Oh, and the forums needs an "edit" buttonWink:(

Are you trying to apply more titles on the top of the black bars (done as a title) from before? Perhaps then you want to do the masking as an effect... I just assumed you weren't doing other titling at the same time.

Yes, two titles in each of the top corners. Just done using the spacebar, looks fine. How do I go about masking?

Try applying a 'Brightness, Decrease' effect to the clip so that it goes back to true black, rather than grayish.

Wait, made the footage clip darker I meant.

Is the fact that the gray areas are part of an overlaying title mean anything...

Do you get different blacks in the preview screen? How does it look after rendering the movie into a WMV or DV AVI file? Send us a clip or snapshot. Which effects exactly are you using to apply the borders etc.

Here's a link to the video I am working directly with concerning everything I have asked: Link (uploaded through Putfile)

As for the effects/titles they are as follows:

Full Screen Top and Bottom Bars:

<Param name="BannerType" value="UpperFlood"/>
<Param name="Background" value="0x000000"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>

</Title>

Top Screen Vertical Alignment:

<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="16"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast"/>

<Param name="BannerType" value="LowerFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="16"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>

<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="up" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>

The scale effect for the left and right bars is currently not on them, still working with it to see if it actually something I may use. If I don't use them this time I can guarantee I will use them another time though.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

I have also figured out the solution to the placement of my text on the bottom screen clips. The title animations for full screen and top screen both involve an upper banner starting at 0.0 and ending at 1.0. With the font I am using for titles, it fits perfectly in the area from 0.0-0.1.

Is there someway to perhaps create a title animation effect so that I can have two banners -- one starting from 0.0-0.1 and the other from 0.1-0.4? If this is possible I may also be able to elimate the darkness issue of the black areas by simply adding a banner to fill the area, that way at least they would match. I would prefer the darker area though, if possible.

Well, nevermind this all. I apologize, heh. It turns out I did a little fooling around and I found something I like and all the areas are the same lightness.

However, I do have one very tiny question I would like to ask. Is it possible to specify in the parameters of a title animation that you want the text to be automatically bold?

So close, so close...

I have seen the video and do not understand what problem you are referring to. The blacks are the same color for all the different crops.

No, they are not. The full screen blacks are the same, but the top and bottom screen ones are not.

I enlarged a screen shot of the top screen (applies to bottom screen as well). The black areas that are not included in the overlayed title are darker than the ones created by the overlayed title. If you were to use the color picker in PS, you would find that overlayed titles area are #101010 and the other black area is the usual #000000.

For this I have taken the screen shot and blown it up. To see what I am talking about, view this image.

Well ok, i see now... Yes there is a problem. I think titles are a bit naughty about colors... dont know why

So you need to do it with some other way. One such way is to use the following move effects. You need to apply two effects on the clip for showing half frame in the middle

Top half: "Move Down 0.5" + "Move Up 0.25"
Bottom half : "Move Up 0.5" + "Move Down 0.25"

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Move Up 0.25" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="up" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Down 0.25" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="down" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Up 0.5" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="up" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Down 0.5" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="down" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.5" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As moveupdown.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

That is absolutely wonderful. I was hoping to be provided with something like that since the black for title animations look tacky in my opinion. I can now also work with it and get the colors for the Full Screens clips on the money as well.

Thank you all so much for all your help. It is very much appreciated.
