Black box censor..
Posted: 20 Sep 2005 11:00 AM
I was told this wasn't possible through WMM, but perhaps you guys could give me a hand.

I have numerous clips that are 320x240 in dimension, but only 320x120 of it needs to show. If any of you have ever played a split-screen multiplayer video game, such as Halo, this is what you can picture it looking like. On some of the clips I need to black out the clip starting at 120px on the Y-axis, and others I need to black it out started at 0px on the Y-Axis.

I've tried the censor and split transition techniques, and even though I may have been doing something wrong, they didn't seem to come out right. I've tried editing the clips in other programs such as Premiere and Flash MX, but I lose quality.

It doesn't sound like it would be hard to do, but I searched the past couple of days on and off and have found nothing.

So, to sum up exactly what I am looking for:

1. A video effect to black out the bottom portion of a 320x240 clip so that only 320x120 of the clip shows starting at 0px on the Y-axis.
2. A video effect to black out the top of portion of a 320x240 clip so that only 320x120 of the clip shows starting at 120px on the Y-axis.

Much appreciated for anyone who tries to help :).

Using tips from glow's post on letterboxes (view post 25342), I created a couple of titles called 'Blackout (upper half)' and Blackout (lower half)'.

First you need a folder called C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. If it isn't there, create it.

Next copy this code into Notepad:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="Blackout (upper half) " iconid="13">
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleStandard"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Blackout top half of screen"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.0 1.0 0.5"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="UpperFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
<Title name="Blackout (lower half) " iconid="13">
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleStandard"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Blackout bottom half of screen"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.5 1.0 0.5"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="LowerFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Save the file with an .xml extension (e.g. 'blackout.xml') and restart WMM.

You should have two new titles called 'Blackout (upper half)' and Blackout (lower half)' that you can place on top of your video. They are titles, but they have no text, so they end up just being black rectangles on the top or bottom of your video.

Absolutely fantastic. That was EXACTLY what I was looking for.

However, I do also have one more question. Say I wanted to vertically center the 320x120 image for the movie. Is this at all possible?

You can do this with two added effects (one to move down 25%, one to move 25% up). In addition, you'll want to black out both the top and bottom 25%. Here's the revised code that uses the Simple3D class for moving, and a two-line title for the blackout.

To display the top half, use the Move Down effect and apply the Blackout title.
To display the bottom half, use the Move Up effect and apply the Blackout title.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Move Down (top half)" iconid="33">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="down" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>
<Effect name="Move Up (bottom half)" iconid="33" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="up" />
<Param name="Progress" value="0.25" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="Blackout (top and bottom)" iconid="13" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleMultiTitles"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Blackout top and bottom"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.0 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="UpperFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.75 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="LowerFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Hi Blaine

When I first created that asymmetric letterbox it was in answer to a question from Pegson which actually originated on his (now defunct) forum and was about hiding controls on a video game..
In that other forum I think actually mentioned to him that you could centre the video by adjusting the MainVideoRect parameter in the title (or was it EntranceVideoRect and ExitVideoRect?).
You might find this easier than having to apply a separate effect.

btw congratulations on taking over 2nd spot - watch out papajohn Wink

I use Firefox+Greasemonkey scripts for easier editing of forum posts, FAQs and displaying embedded images Wink

Glow, I must give you most of the credit for this post since I borrowed your code heavily... plus a bit of Rehan's. Anyway, using your suggestion, here are two titles that will automatically move the top or bottom half of the video to the center and also mask it with black bars.

The titles are two-line titles called 'Center top video, black bars' and 'Center bottom video, black bars'. No need to apply a separate move effect now.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Titles>
<TitleDLL guid="{353359C1-39E1-491b-9951-464FD8AB071C}">
<Title name="Center top video, black bars" iconid="13" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleMultiTitles"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Blackout top and bottom"/>
<Param name="MainVideoRect" value="0.0 0.25 1.0 1.0"/>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderFirst"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.75 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="LowerFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.0 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="UpperFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
<Title name="Center bottom video, black bars" iconid="13" >
<Param name="InternalName" value="TitleMultiTitles"/>
<Param name="Description" value="Blackout top and bottom"/>
<Param name="MainVideoRect" value="0.0 -0.25 1.0 1.0"/>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast"/>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.0 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="UpperFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
<Paragraph>
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.0 0.75 1.0 0.25"/>
<Param name="BannerType" value="LowerFlood"/>
<Param name="BannerColor1" value="Black"/>
<Param name="Text" value=" "/>
<Param name="FontSize" value="255"/>
</Paragraph>
</Title>
</TitleDLL>
</Titles>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

As always, copy this text into notepad and save it in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder with an .xml extension (e.g. centervideo.xml).

A couple suggestions for modifications:
1) You can always put something in for the "Text" parameter, or let it be entered by the user. For example, you might want to put "Player 1" in the top bar and their name in the bottom bar.
2) You can alway change the color of the bars by changing the BannerColor1 parameter. For example, you might have player 1's video displayed in blue and player 2's video displayed in red. If you want to get fancy, you could even use a gradient by specifying two different colors.

Look under 'change title animimation'. It should be under 'two-line' titles. If not, give us more details on what you did and what you see.

HI, I followed the instructions above and created a blackout.xml file but it doesn't come up in my movie maker, even after checking under title animation. I have 32bit windows vista movie maker 6.0.

My project is a video which has video on right side and personal info on left side of the screen. That personal info on left side of the screen needs to blacked out, so that only the video can be seen. I tried resizer and letterbox, but with no help. Please let me know what I can do.

Thank you.

The XML above is version 1.0 meaning it will only work on the XP version of Movie Maker (specifically WMM 2.0 or WMM 2.1). All XML for the Vista version (WMM 6.0) will start with a version of 2.8 and will often be shown in purple.

For WMM 6.0, I'd recommend doing a title overlay where you create a mostly transparent .png image but with black in the places you want to cover. Then do it as a full screen logo overlay (view post 126998).

I did everything you said and in credits I can see the Overlay option but i can't use it for some reason, NOR does it appear in my video. The video is 1min long, and it flickers the 1st second, but thats as much as i'm getting. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Do you have any pre-made files like you did with the resizer and letterbox, which can be used? What else can I do?

thank you.

I would go to PapaJohn's website (papajohn.org) and look under:
Edit Movies > XML > Script Types > Custom Overlays

Now find the Title Overlay Starter Kit for WMM 6.0. Follow the directions in his tutorial and make sure you can get those to work. Then just edit the .png files to create the censor bar on the desired area of the screen.

i finally got it to work using papjohn

<Title name="PapaJohn Overlay 10" guid="PapaJohn Overlay 10" iconid="13" >
<Param name="Animation" value="TitleStandard" />
<Param name="Description" value="Superimpose Image 10" />
<Param name="LogoBitmapFilename" value="Overlay10.png" />
<Param name="LogoRect" value="0.00 0.00 0.10 0.10" />
<Paragraph>
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast" />
<Param name="ShadowOutline" value="None" />
<Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.05 0.88333 0.9 0.08333" />
<Param name="FontSize" value="18" />
<Param name="Font" value="Monotype Corsiva" />
<Param name="IsBold" value="true" />
<Param name="HorizontalAlignment" value="Center" />
<Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Top" />
<Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="EntranceDuration" value="0.25" />
<Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade" />
<Param name="ExitDuration" value="0.25" />
<Param name="IsOneLine" value="False" />
</Paragraph>
</Title>

i created a png image and it works. The only problem is its in the left upper corner and is very small it covers maybe 2% of the screen. I played with the rect numbers above but it doesn't change the size. How can i enlarge the black box and have it cover like 40-50% of the screen and only the left side of the screen?

Thanx
