Thanks, but of course it was the other guy's idea. I can't think
of any other treatments we could do, but we could take his
idea(again) of the crystal ball, and run with that.

This is rather crude on it's own I know, but it's just a sample
This is done by freezing the progress of the Metacreations Lens
transition onto a black screen. I was originally going to then
use COMPA+B and I also tried A-B(which gave a LOTR all seeing
Orb look) but chroma keying looked ok...so I used that instead.
In 20/20 hindsight, I should have used a blue background if I
was going to chromakey it, it might have looked a little cleaner.

Well, it may not be posssible...in the respect that it looks very real,
or that it looks a lot like the witches chrystal ball. But you should
be able to create a reasonable immitation, enough that your
audience gets the point or the joke.
If it were me...I would use a tripod and then film your actor to
the left of some sort of mock chrystal ball. Perhaps use a
basketball as a prop(or a bigger ball if you have one). Make
sure the ball never moves and make sure the actor never put his
hand in front of the ball. Then you need to film your witch video,
or whatever you want to be in the ball. You could try to create
a black mask overlay that would black out everything but the
crystal ball, and then merge that with you video, similar to what
we did with the witch in the window...but that can be tedious.
At this point you could alsothink of doing a chroma-key of the
basketball and wax may do a decent job,but I think it would just end
up looking like a circle, not a chrystal ball. So I would stay with the
lens transition. It goes a little something like this(you must download
the Metacreation transitions from Rehan's site...www.rehanfx.org)

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="204" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{107045CA-06E0-11D2-8D6D-00C04F8EF8E0}" >
<Transition name="MetaCreations Lens- hold" iconid="9">
<Param name="Copyright" value="Copyright MetaCreations Corp. 1998. Unauthorized duplication of this string is illegal. {107045CA-06E0-11D2-8D6D-00C04F8EF8E0}" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.65" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Now...use this to put your witch in the lens, and then create a PIP+
effect to move it to the correct spot on the screen. Then use the
chroma-black transition to merge the ball with your other actor.
(I misspoke before, black is our only option.)

So...there you have it. You are on your own with PIP+(also at Rehan's
website) It's an advance project, but PIP+ isn't too tough to figure out.

That would require a lot of work on my part to stage something
like that, and I am not selling anything...just offering a suggestion.
Film a closeup of yourself, and put it into the lens transition.
See if you like that result...and progress from there.
