Trim video without sound
Posted: 25 May 2013 02:18 PM
I want to trim a video to create a new short video. I don't want any of the original sound so the new video with be visual only. I can trim the video but not create a new video without sound. Is this possible and if so how please, need to be detailed as I have only used movie maker for 5 minutes. I did try adjusting the speaker icon to zero but on the new movie all I had to do was turn it up to get sound and I don't want this to be possible.
thank you in advance

You just need to set the video volume to zero inside of Movie Maker. The instructions vary depending on the version you are using. In the newest versions, select the video clip, go to the Video Tools > Edit tab and set the Video Volume to the far left (mute).

In the older versions, use the Clip > Audio > Mute choice to do the same thing.

Hi considerate guy,
Thank you for the reply
I have version 11, it came with windows 7.

I have tried turning the volume down using the video volume slider when I trim from my original video. On the new video, all I have to do is turn the volume up and I have the original sound again. I don't want to have the original sound track available.
Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you

Try using the Project tab. Set the audio mix so that it is all the way to the right on Music.

Then save your movie and try playing that in Windows Media Player.

Okay, I'm a little confused, so perhaps you can explain the exact steps you are trying?

In the simplest version you should be able to do this:
1) Add your video clip
2) Go to the Video Tools | Edit tab and set the Video Volume to the far left (mute = volume 0)
3) Save your new movie (File > Save movie).

The resulting movie should have no sound. If you are judging the sound based on the project preview, yes, you can still change the volume inside Movie Maker. But once you save the movie to a new file, that file will have no audio.

Please reply back if I have misunderstood some part of your process to remove the audio.

sorry considerate_guy not been well the last few evenings.

1. open movie maker
2. click "click here to browse for videos and photos"
3. select a video
4. message box comes up preparing video 1 of 1
5 wait for 4 to complete
6 click edit
7 video volume, set to as low as possible
8. trim, set start and finish points
9. save trim
10 open new file, reset volume to maximum and hey presto I have sound.

I don't want sound and I don't want the person I send the trimed version to, to be able to restore the sound.

Step #9... are you using the File menu and choosing 'Save movie'? That will generate a .wmv or .mp4 file that is a new file with no sound. You send that to your friend and they won't be able to recover any sound from that file.

Again, Movie Maker does *nothing* to your original files. But if you trim and save with no sound, the new file will have no sound. That's the one you want to send to your friend.

considerate guy,
thank you for your continued help
re step 9 I was using save trim from the Trim tab. If I click what looks like a word document in the top left I get save project and save project as. if I select save project as, the only file option given is a wlmp file..if I click the home tab there is a save movie option but I did not know what to pick from the drop down list.

You can get to the 'Save movie' option from the Home tab or from the first "File" tab. The first tab is a menu and you can choose 'Save movie'.

I would choose 'Recommended for this project' or 'For computer'. Then view the resulting movie in Windows Media Player and confirm it has no sound.
