H.264 (MP4) format problems
Posted: 26 Feb 2013 12:54 PM
I am running what I believe is Windows Live Movie Maker, or WLMM. I think it is a pretty easy to learn program with the ability to add pictures and sound files (mp3) to my MOV files in one project. After creating a project that took me a week or do, I decided to make a DVD of it to run on my BD player. I went to the Save Movie pull down tab and noticed that it gave me the option to save it in High-Definition Display 1080p. So, I rendered it as an MPEG-4/H.264 file. After it completed the process, it asked me if I wanted to play the file and I clicked play. WMP came up and gave me an error that it could not read the file. The file was given an extension of MP4. It would not run on any program that I had. I even downloaded VLC player, but it also could not read the file. I went back to WLMM and re-rendered it as a "high definition" WMV file. This time it would play in WMP. Does anyone know why Windows would put in the H264 format option, if it will not play in WMP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a technical question better answered in the Microsoft Community Forums (view post 242841). I have seen others with the same symptoms and hopefully some of the moderators over there can give you an exact answer on why WLMM is failing to create a valid .mp4 file.

Please give them all the details you provided here. Good luck.

Windows Movie Maker still troubles users for its defect on video support, which is limited to AVI, MPEG and WMV files. That means you will fail to import and edit MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker. You need to convert MP4 to Windows Movie Maker natively supported formats like WMV or AVI in advance.

H.264 videos always can't be supported by Windows Movie Maker. One option is to install the H.264 codec, problems may be resolved. Another workaround is to convert H.264 files to Windows Movie Maker friendly format like WMV.
