Should I use Panasonic's software - or third party?
Posted: 04 Oct 2012 09:38 AM
When I download a video file from my Panasonic Camcorder using Panasonic's HDwriter software, I get (in addition to a ,m2ts (MPEG-TS) file ---- three other files:
".cont," ".pmpd," and a ".tmb" file. Are these files specifically for use by the HDwriter?

When I download a file directly (just drag and drop it into a new folder) I only get the .m2ts file.

I am trying to figure out whether I am better off using the HDwriter (in which case I am stuck in Panasonic's environment) - or if I am better off downloading by draging the file into a new folder and using a third party file converter. Ultimately, I will be editing video is WMM.
I could use some advice here.

The only real thing that WMM seems to be lacking - that I would find useful - is a "contrast" effect.

Thank you,

Thanks to all for your help.

For my Panasonic, I've just used the standard import and gotten an .mts file. I've skipped the HDWriter software. The additional files have metadata that might be useful for the HDWriter software, but isn't really necessary for other editors.

One thing that the Panasonic does is it breaks long segments into several files. I think the HDWriter software will recombine those, but just taking the individual files will not. I've not found that to be a problem, but something to consider.
