Black preview screen
Posted: 17 Apr 2012 07:32 PM
I'm running a windows 7 laptop with 4GB RAM and a 64-bit operating system, if that helps. I'm using WMM 2.1

When I click on individual pictures or movies in my collections, they show on the preview screen. However, when I put them in the timeline and try to play them, the preview screen stays black. The audio from the movies works fine, but nothing else. Tried it in full screen and got the same results. Uninstalled WMM and reinstalled, and no difference. Anyone know any solutions?

First, if you are on Windows 7 and want a classic version of Movie Maker, I suggest WMM 6.0 instead of WMM 2.1. I've not heard of a standalone installer of WMM 2.1 (at least not one I trust) so I'm not sure what you installed. You can find the link in my signature.

If you video still doesn't work correctly in WMM 6.0 (it may not), I suggest downloading Freemake Video Converter and changing it to .wmv format. If you do that, just install the program and not any add-ons it may offer to install.

I've tried both running and saving it, but I can't get the WMM 6.0 to go past the 'please wait while windows configures this' window. It just disapears.

Thanks for your help.

Are you running as an administrator? Did you get a request to increase privileges to install?

Have you checked if it actually installed? Look for a program item in your Start / Programs menu. Also check C:\Program Files\Movie Maker

I found it in the program files, never would've thought to look there. And the video works; thanks a million!

If you wouldn't mind one more question, I'm trying to do a test DVD and it's not working. When I try to use the publish movie and select DVD, it saves and closes the project like it says, but then nothing happens. I tried manually opening windows DVD, but when I tried opening the project, it said MSWMM wasn't a supported file type. Any advice, on a solution, or do I need to find a way to convert it?

Also in your start menu, you should see a shortcut icon for Windows Movie Maker 6.0
