Question:
I am using Window Live Movie Maker version 2011.
I can't seem to find a way to remove the original audio so I can replace it with background music. WMM doesn't have any Help guide about this.

Solution:
Windows Live Movie Maker does not have the ability to separate the audio track from a video. But here's a workaround to achieve your purpose of adding the background music without the original audio.

You can first mute the volume of the original video in WMM and then add the background music. This way there shall only be the sound of the background music remained.

Here're the steps to mute the volume of the original video: click the Edit tab --> click the Video volume button and drag the volume slider to the very left.

After this is done you can then add your background music. In the final output file there will only hear the sound of the background music.

There are three methods to remove sound from video

1 : If you are a Windows user, you can also give Windows Movie Maker a try. Here are the concrete steps:

Import the video to a new project and add it to timeline;
Click on the bit of the video you want to mute;
Click on "Clip" at the top of the screen;
Click on audio;
Click on mute.
Cons: This way only mute the audio from video rather than delete the audio from video. Furthermore, if your operating system is Mac or your source files are incompatible with Windows Movie Maker, the way will not work at all.
2: If you are a Mac user, iMovie is a nice choice to remove sound from video. Here are the concrete steps:

Import video to iMovie and place it on the timeline;
Select the track in the timeline;
Go to "Advanced" tab -> Extract Audio;
Select the audio track and delete it.
Cons: This way is only for Mac users. If you are using a Windows or your source files are not supported by iMovie, it is not fit you.

3: Here is the tutorial of using third free tool
