How To: Create an overlay effect on WLMM
Posted: 28 Feb 2011 02:57 AM
This post is going to show you how to use your own image as an overlay effect for your videos.
There is some limitations and it requires a little bit of computer work to get the job done though.
Also if you are on on 64-bit computer you are going to navigate to C:\program files(x86)\ instead of C:\program files\

To do list:
Done - Give the effect its own icon
90% done - Finish up the wlmx file (clean it up)
Done - Take out the fading in/out of the overlay (Or make it optional)
Done - Take out the bubbles (barely noticeable at all, but to make it more official)
Done - Make the overlay last over the whole duration of the picture (Should be easy and quick to do)
DONE! - Make an overlay as a title. Please See: This Post

Limitations:
Requires the use of resource hacker
Takes a little bit of time
Animated images aren't supported (no gifs) - Actually about 10 external images can be used and they are currently masked to move down to up but this can most likely be changed and use images to be moving.

Requirements:
Resource Hacker
Source Files
Admin Privileges
Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 (Update your Windows Live Movie Maker to the latest version)

Instructions:
1. Download resource hacker and install it, download the source files to your desktop.
2. Extract the "OverlayEffectTemplate(Betea).zip"
3. Move the "OverlayEffectTemplate.wlmx"to "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMakerTemplates"
4. Open "Overlay.dll" with Resource Hacker
5. Open the RCDATA folder, then open the IMAGE1 folder
6. Right click on 1033 and select "Replace Resource"
7. Click on "Open file with new resource"
8. Find your picture and select it (recommend png)
9. In the "Resource Type" box type in "RCDATA"
10. In the "Resource Name" box type in "IMAGE1"
11. In the "Resource Language" box type in "1033"
12. Save your .dll file now.
13. Create a new folder called "Effects" inside the "Photo Gallery" folder
14. Move your new Overlay.dll into the Effects folder you just created.
15. Move the Overlay.ico into the Effects folder as well.
16. You now have an overlay effect. It will be called overlay under effects in WLMM

And your outcome should be: (only a different picture of course)
http://img36.imageshack.us/i/91777559.png/

Changelog:
02-28-2011 - Initial Release
03-05-2011 - Removed "bubbles" from the effect, cleaned up code a little bit.
03-15-2011 - Made the effect last for the whole picture, cleaned up a lot of code.
03-21-2011 - Added an icon to the effect, gave the effect its own category "Overlays", and changed the name to "CustomOverlay".

First off, the effect is great, and your instructions were easy to follow! I've got it working beautifully on my video. I was wondering if you could help me remove the bubbles that are floating up from the image.

thanks!

Thank you and welcome to the forums. I am happy to see that more people are starting to show interest. I have updated the source files so just re download them, then replace the OverlayEffectTemplate.wlmx file in your folder with this new one and the bubbles will be gone. EnjoySmiley

It should, I don't see why it wouldn't. If you have any problems let me know.

I'm not sure how it would help with a greenscreen project however. For that I would suggest Windows Movie Maker 6.0 and Rehan's ShaderTFX (view post 126998).

Thanks for creating this guide. It's easy to follow, and it seems really straightforward. And yet, ... it doesn't work for me. I tried to create a custom overlay, but it simply doesn't show up in the effects panel. I had to create the C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery folder in the process.

I then figured that I must have done something wrong, and tried to install the effects you uploaded to Media Fire - and they don't show up either.

Could this be an indication of a change in the latest version of Live Movie Maker, or is there still hope that I can get it to work?

I'm running Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3508.1109) on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bits.

I'm assuming since you are on a 64-bit computer WLMM installed its self to C:\Program Files(x86)\ So instead go to "C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery" Then follow the guide from there.

Gosh, I should have figured that out myself. But since the "Windows Live" folder existed, it didn't even cross my mind.

Thanks for your help!

Ok I'll go into detail about it later if you need help but here is what you need to do:

You need to create a second image in the overlay.dll with the image you want to overlay.

Then you are going to need to make a copy of the OverlayEffectTemplate.wlmx file.
Inside the copy of this file that you made you need to edit 4 lines:
<MetadataString containerField='value' name='TemplateThumbnailPath' value='"Effects\Overlay.ico"'/> - You can either make this blank to have no icon or leave it the same to have the same icon.
<ImageTexture DEF='DummyImageTexture' repeatS='false' repeatT='false' url='"res:\\Effects\Overlay.dll\IMAGE1"' /> - You need only need to change this to IMAGE2, just make sure you name your image IMAGE2 when you add it to the Overlay.dll
<MetadataString containerField='value' name='TemplateTitle' value='"CustomOverlay"'/> - You want to change this to whatever you want to name your overlay
<MetadataString containerField='value' name='TemplateID' value='"OverlayEffectTemplate"'/> - Just delete Overlay on this and have it match your TemplateTitle name.

Then add your copied OverlayEffectTemplate.wlmx to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMakerTemplates

Thanks! It works perfect!

But is it any way to use a video as a overlay? I tested but I don't get it work. I mean that can I get a video in the bottom of the video? For example under a text, like the text effect tat are built in. Hope you understand.

Currently that I know of there is no way to use any videos or animated images in Windows Live Movie Maker. What I do know is it takes some images and animates them through code in the template files. Such as the Cinematic bubbles or light bursts. Its really a shame that WLMM doesn't come with any PIP effects, you figure it would by now since the older revisions of Windows Movie Maker over the years....

Even if one could "hack" the transitions in WLMM, they are now limited to 10 seconds. That means it would be pretty difficult to recreate anything with two videos (e.g. PIP, chroma, compositing, etc.). I really am not happy with the lack of extensibility in WLMM to do things like we used to. Sad

Just wanted to say thanks very much. Instructions easy to follow, looking forward to seeing how you go with making an overlay title because it would be good to be able to control the duration.

Thanks again!

Hey I did everything you said and followed the instructions step by step. The effect shows up in wmm, but when I apply it, the effect doesnt show and the whole video just pauses. When I remove it the video resumes again. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you are missing the DLL file or the image inside the DLL file is missing. Please make sure you named your image "IMAGE1" inside your DLL file and that the DLL file is placed in the correct directory.
C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMakerTemplates\Effects\Overlay.dll
Or if your on a 64-bit computer the DLL file needs to be in
C:\Program Files(x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMakerTemplates\Effects\Overlay.dll

I recommend you go through all the steps again because many things can cause this problem.

Which photo editing program are you using? In most programs you can simply select your area that you want transparent and then click 'Del' key. Finally save it as a .png image.

Here's a tutorial example using Paint.net (free download):

Hi,

thanks for the very easy to use instruction on this one!
I managed to have an overlay image in my video but I am using it for a special purpose. In fact, I just have a graphical text (with shadows, border etc.) which will be displayed at certain times within the video, pretty much like a claim.

Right now, the Overlay will display immediately and stay there until the clip is over. Is there a possibility to limit the effect like you may do it for an animation by adding a start time and a duration to it?
I already looked into the template file and compared it to the template of the TextEffectFadeZoom animation but I was unable to figure out how to do it.

And the second question (but this is only a nice to have for me):
Would it be possible to animate the effect? I would like to use an animation like the TextEffectFadeZoomTemplate on it but I guess that will be too hard to achieve, right?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Best regards,

Legedric

Welcome to the forums!
To answer your first question. You can use a title overlay effect, its the same effect as this one only you can set it anywhere you want and for any amount of time since it is a title. Please see this.

To answer your second question, you want to the overlay to fade in when it is added?
This is easy to do but I am unable to do it right now because I am not near a computer that has Windows Vista or Windows 7 on it. I will get to it soon though.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Hey moviemakerkid,

first i have to say thank you! :)
I install the overlay with my picture and it works great.

But my question is:
How can i do the fade in / out option for my overlay? :)
It stays directly on the videos no matter i choose "fade in from black" "fade out to black" ...

Sorry for my bad english ;)

Adding the fade in to the effect is possible. (It was originally in the effect, but I took it out)
I will try and get it done today. (I'm having a hard time being around a computer with Windows 7 or Vista; I need to reinstall it on my laptop but I haven't got around to it and I have to do it with my phones wifi hotspot so it takes a while)
Edit:
Ok so instead of using the file provided in the SourceFiles.zip you can use this file. This one will give you the fade effect with your overlay.
EnjoySmiley
