Windows Live Movie Maker Snapshot
Posted: 25 Feb 2011 12:50 PM
When I try to take a snapshot of the video the picture comes out stretched horizontaly. It is not viewable. The machine is a Windows 7 64 bit.

Doing the same thing with the same video on a Windows 7 32 bit machine works just fine. Help. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum...

I just tried it with a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop, using a 'standard sized' WMV file as the source, and have no issues.

If I take a snapshot from an odd-sized video clip such as one 162 pixels wide by 890 pixels high, which WLMM distorts to fill the frame, I get the same distortion in the snapshot..... stretched horizontally.

... my website isn't here... it's at www.papajohn.org

It is standard size Hi Def 1280 by 720. The picture is more than distorted, it is unrecognizable. And as I said before it works just fine with the same video on my 32 bit machine. Could it be a codec (though I don't know how that would apply to a snapshot) or something external to the program? Thanks.

What is the format of the clip? Is it .wmv or another file type?

Yeah, that could be related to the codecs loaded on your system... but I would have thought it would have worked with the codecs that come with Windows 7. Maybe you have a conflicting codec from some other software you have for handling .m2ts files.

The video plays just fine. It is the snapshot that is garbled. Do you still think it could be the codec? Thanks.

I'm grasping at straws since I've never seen that behavior. I assume you've had no problems saving the final video as a movie, right? Hmm...

Some jpeg's I have saved from the net will only show as a long thin line in windows photo viewer, open them up in MS picture manager or paint--see what it looks like, if normal save them in a different format

I also have this problem bud!

Just searching for an answer, and found your post, I know it's a few months old now.

Also using win7 64-bit, editing an MP4 file in standard 720HD.

Also get stretchy, unrecognisable snapshots.

I edited a video from the same camera a few weeks ago with no problems :(

Erm, ok.

So I had this problem for 2 days, and as soon as I posted this it worked.

Here's what I did in between:

I resized the preview window , took a screen grab of the screen to get the shot I wanted, then I remembered that I have video files from 2 different sources in my project, my phone and my camera, so I took a snapshot of a frame from my phone source, it worked.

I then went back to the video from my camera, and it worked.

Hope this helps somehow!?
