Corrupt wlmp resulting from WMM Crash
Posted: 24 Apr 2010 12:00 PM
I recently helped recover a corrupt Windows Movie Maker .wlmp file and would like to document what I did here in case it helps anyone else with a similar issue:

Error message: Windows Live Movie Maker has Stopped Working
-Encountered when trying to open the corrupt file

Cause: Invalid ExtentRef ID in wlmp XML project source
-Most likely a result of a WMM Program crash.

Steps I took to resolve the problem:

1) Ensure that WMM could open other project files (In this case it did)
2) Make a copy of a valid project file and rename it to a .xml extension
3) Make a copy of the corrupt project file and rename it to a .xml extension

4) Try to open the corrupt project file in Internet Explorer
-If there is an issue with the XML Structure, IE will tell you. Otherwise it will load the file fine.
-In this case, IE Loaded the file fine so I knew there were no XML Schema issues

5) Use WinMerge (Open source file comparison utility) to compare the Good project .xml file against the corrupt project .xml file
-You can find WinMerge here: http://winmerge.org/

6) In this case, There was a difference towards the end of the corrupt XML file:

<ExtentSelector extentID="4" gapBefore="0" primaryTrack="false">
<Effects />
<Transitions />
<BoundProperties />
<ExtentRefs>
<ExtentRef id="14" />
</ExtentRefs>
</ExtentSelector>

-I changed out these 3 lines:

<ExtentRefs>
<ExtentRef id="14" />
</ExtentRefs>

to be this line:

<ExtentRefs />

so that the whole section looks now like:

<ExtentSelector extentID="4" gapBefore="0" primaryTrack="false">
<Effects />
<Transitions />
<BoundProperties />
<ExtentRefs />
</ExtentSelector>

7) I changed the extension back to .wlmp

8) The project file was able to be opened successfully (Without WMM crashing)

Notes:

-In this case, there was no extentRef of 14 in the "ExtentRefs" Section of the project XML File
-WMM does not know how to handle invalid references and just crashes.
-Removing the invalid extentRef resolved this issue for me.

Windows 7 64 bit -it won't show or give me access to the file extension. So when I rename it, I get the following

movieproject.xml.wlmp

I've also tried it with .MSWMM as an extension and get the same.

How can I change the extension if it won't give me access to the line? I've tried everything I know.

Hi inblugee1968,

In the 14 months since I posted this, I have since started my own blog (http://boredwookie.net) where I post the solutions to problems I find. I apologize for the delay in checking this thread.

To answer your question, this is how I show file extensions on my Windows computers:

1) Click on Start -> Documents
2) Click on Organize -> Folder and Search options
3) Click on the "View" Tab
4) UN-Check the option to "Hide extensions for known file Types"
5) Press the "Apply" button
6) At the top under "Folder Views", click "Apply to Folders"

@delete123, I renamed that file to 1111111.wlmp and it opened fine in Windows Live Movie Maker. I obviously am missing the source files (no video or pictures), but it has all the titles and effects working.

What symptoms are you seeing?

Well you can try removing the Extent lines like the original poster noted.

Just find the <ExtentRefs> and </ExtentRefs> lines and delete everything between them. You'll lose all your titles however.

Also, you might temporarily move your source files.
Currently the project is looking for:
C:\Users\{username}\Desktop\MVI_7178.AVI
C:\Users\Public\Music\Sample Music\Kill Bill soundtrack.mp3
C:\Users\{username}\Desktop\hit the road jack - ray charles (instrumental).mp3

Try moving/renaming them and see if you can open the project. If so, reconnect them one by one by clicking on the yellow exclamation (!) icons.

Some other things to consider:
Certain file types can cause problems for WLMM. If in doubt, try converting video to .wmv format (instead of .avi) and audio to .wma format (instead of .mp3)

Just open that .txt file in Notepad and find all the lines that have:
BoundPropertyStringSet Name="string"
You'll find the text on the next line; for example:
BoundPropertyStringElement Value="الأرنب لأموو"

I was using .MP4 files instead of .WMV and I ran into the 'not responding' error when saving the movie (didnt happen until I was several hours into the project). The following fix worked for me:

- converted all my .MP4 files used in my movie to .wmv files with Freemake Video Converter and saved them in the same directory as the original .MP4 files
- opened the .wlmp file in a text editor like Wordpad
- replaced all .MP4 with .wmv, then saved the file
- reopened the .wlmp file in Movie Maker, everything worked fine since

FYI I used Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7 but I'm guessing this will work for earlier versions as well.
