Welcome to the forums.

Try using SUPER (it's a free download) to convert your files to avi format using ffmpeg and MS-mpeg4-v2 as the Video Output Codec. See this page for download instructions (as erightsoft doesn't provide a direct download link for it). See my post in this thread for a set of instructions for using SUPER.

Windows Movie Maker still troubles users for its defect on video support, which is limited to AVI, MPEG and WMV files. That means you will fail to import and edit MPEG4 files in Windows Movie Maker. In order to make MPEG4 video clips compatible with WMM, you'll need to convert MPEG4 to Windows Movie Maker natively supported formats like WMV or AVI in advance.

I agree with you, convert the mpeg files into format supported by WMM by some video conversion tool is good choice here.

To edit MPEG4 in Windows Movie Maker, you need proper codec installed. If you don’t want to try a pile of complicated codecs and download them for video editing in Windows Movie Maker, you can try Brorsoft Video Converter, which is able to resolve your trouble effortlessly – quickly and easily converting MP4 to WMV or AVI for Windows Movie Maker. In addition, it can also convert among other video and audio formats like AVI, WMV, MKV, FLV, MOV, MP4, MTS, MP3, WMA, etc. Follow the steps below to complete your task.
