DPL Kaleidoscope Effects for ShaderTFX
Posted: 02 Mar 2010 05:20 PM
See the Sample Video button for a video sample of using these effects. Not sure of the utility of these effects, but it was fun figuring it out.

If you like what you see, download and run the installer exe. You may need administrator privilege. It has a proper uninstaller. 7 new kaleidoscope effects will be installed.

You must have ShaderTFX installed and operating. Expired trial OK except for background images.

Also, (my apologies) your Vista machine and graphics chips must be able to handle Pixel Shader level 3.0. If not, the effects will install, but any preview or use of the effects will result in just a black screen. I just couldn't squeeze this design into Pixel Shader 2.0.

These effects take a pie shaped slice of the underlying image and copy and/or reflect it to the output rectangle/ellipse n times. Also, the input and output can be rotated with angle commands. There is a SourceCenterXY command, and a Zoom command to allow interesting combinations.

Put your own image under these effects for a variety of visual sensations and/or see the XML and FX files to find the XML parameters that you can customize for your own use and build another kaleidoscope. They are :

- float4 RectangleDst - Default = {0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0};
- float2 CenterSrcXY - Default = {0.0, 0.0};
- float DirectionSrc - Default = 0; // In Degrees - 0-Right, 90-Up etc.
- float DirectionDst - Default = 0; // In Degrees - 0-Right, 90-Up etc.
- int Reflections - Default = 4; // 1-10 is reasonable
- float Zoom - Default = 1.0;
- float4 RectangleBG - Default = {0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0};
- float4 BackgroundColor - Default = {-1, 0, 1, 1}; // the -1 is don't use
- bool UseBackgroundImage - Default = false; // Else Color or Underlying image
- bool UseEllipse - Default = false; // Else Rectangle
- bool ClampEdges - Default = false; // Else Repeat
- bool CopyMode - Default = false; // Else Mirroe
- float2 FadeInOutTime - Default = {0.0, 0.0}; // Fade time in seconds
- float TransparencyK - Default = 1.0; // Transparency of the RectangleDst area

Have fun, PatrickL

Hi Patrick - I think the kaleidescope effects are very cool (and groovy!). I attached my specs for my ATI Radeon HD 4350 card. The specs says it supports Pixel shader 4.1. Do you know, would that also mean it supports 3.0?

Sorry if it is a dumb question but this part is new to me. Thje reason I ask is I downloaded them and am getting a black screen but I am also getting a black screen for other effects at times and other times they have worked - for example the DPL circle, diamond, heart series of effects that go BW to color and the curtains weffects which I love. So, I am wondering if it is my new 64 bit computer or graphics card or what...Also, I bought Pixelan Spice FX 5.0 packs bundle and they all work fine on my computer. Thanks so much in advance.

Maureen

Maureen, Shader 4.1 would include 3.0 so you should be OK.

Since some of the ShaderTFX based effects work, I assume that you got the 64 bit version of ShaderTFX installed and working OK.

To install my stuff, make sure that you select the correct Shared folder during the installation. Select it in the Directory Dialog during DPL installs. The default install goes to the folder location of 32 bit Vista, you have to change that on 64 bit Vista.

Other than installation problems (usually wrong directory), with one version of nVidia geForcea display driver, I had the occasional black screen problem with ShaderTFX based TFXs. A later version of the display driver solved the problem.

Good luck, PatrickL

Hi Patrick - I did download the 64bit version of Shader TFX and I made sure that I selected the correct shared folder (after your help a few weeks back). I did check my graphics driver update a while back but will check again. I may ninstall and install again the kaleidescope effects now and see what ahappens. Thanks so much.

Why thank you so much! I had a blast making them!! Now if we could just add smell-a-vision to those kaleidoscope effects and produce the scent of patchouli oil we'd be in business. :)

Here are a couple more Kaleidoscope effects. These are both 6 mirror Kals where the source moves from corner to corner and finally to the center of the underlying image. All the while rotating the source and destination and zooming in a bit. An ellipse with mirrored image version and a rectangle wirh copied image version.

See a (too longWink) 720p video sample

Put the following XML in the AddOnTFX folder:

Hi PatrickL,

First of all, thanks to your sharing.
I am new to xml codes, I have installed the above code as mentioned (save as "DPL Kaleidoscope Custom.xml" in AddOnTFX folder) but it comes out with the effect name but a black screen with a 'x'. Is there anything I missed to do?

wmmfans, welcome to the forums.

For this XML to work:
The DPL Kaleidoscope Effects must be installed - DPL_Kaleid_FXs_Installer.exe
ShaderTFX must be installed and operating.
Your graphics card must be capable of executing Pixel Shader Level 3.0 HLSL instructions.

Do the eight standard DPL Kaleidoscope Effects work for you?

PatrickL,

Oh yes, I just installed the ShaderTFX and not DPL_Kaleid_FXs_Installer.exe. Now I installed it and it's working great. Thanks so much.

Win 7 64 bit on a year-old Toshiba with MM 6 installed also paid version of Shader which I haven't been able to register yet. Can use MM effects and transitions.
Can see the preview of your effects but I get only a black screen when I apply the effect. I am a total beginner with graphics settings etc. I copied your files to Program Files 86 and regular but it has not helped. I really want to use this since I paid for the Shader aoftware, thining that was the problem. I only see Shader when I look at Collections. Maybe this is the problem but I don't know how to fix it.

Patrick, even with the new install, still get no clip previews and see black screen where effect is applied that changes 3 times to show a flash of the underlying image, assume these flashes are when the effect stops animating, if that helps at all. This is a tough one!

There was a problem with some AMD Graphics chips (and maybe others) with an early return in the FX code.

Try this updated version. Download and run the installer exe.

Please report results. The update has been applied to all the download links.
