[Pinned Post] CUSTOM TRANSITIONS, EFFECTS and TITLES (Read this First!)
Posted: 20 Feb 2004 01:55 PM
This forum is for posting, and discussing your custom Movie Maker transitions/effects or to share your creations with other users...

Note on XP vs. Vista:
XP and Vista handle custom transitions, effects and titles differently. Since XP has been out a long time, most of the items you'll find here are for XP only. Often these are shown in blue and you'll see that the XML starts with version 1.0. Vista XML is often shown in purple and with a version of 2.8. The two are not interchangeable, so be sure you pick the one that matches your version of Windows.

How to use XML code from these forums
1) Go to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared. Create a new folder called AddOnTFX using right-click > New Folder
2) Copy and paste the XML code into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
3) Now save the XML into C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX with a name that ends in .xml (this is an important step)
In Vista, you will likely get warnings that prevent you from saving directly in the AddOnTFX folder. If so, save in another folder (like 'Documents') then copy the file to the AddOnTFX folder in a separate step.
4) If there are any associated image files noted in the XML (.png, .gif, .bmp, etc.) you need to save those as well in the location specified in the XML file. If you later end up with a black image, recheck this step.
5) Restart Movie Maker (by closing the program and restarting it).

Josh,

You're posting in the wrong location. Sad

As PapaJohn explained to you earlier, you just can't move them from a program into WMM. Each software works differently and the software you're interested in copying belongs to Sony Vegas; WMM belongs to Microsoft.

That being said, PapaJohn explained that you would have to create your own xml codes to attempt to recreate the effect. If you're asking where you can find that, then go to Microsoft to learn how to build your own. There are many custom transitions, effects, and titles. If you're looking for a particular customer transition, effect, or title, then post it in the appropriate forum to see if someone can assist you.

Josh,

Create a new post and in the subject line, mention the type ofr effect/transition you are looking for. However, I don't know anyone on here who is going to pull up Vegas and attempt to recreate all of their transitions, effects for WMM which was why I referred to Window's website. Have you looked at all the new things Rehan, Blaine, MMK, PatrickL, etc have created? They have some wonderful stuff that Vegas doesn't have.Smiley

OK, I am real novice here, so I really only truly understand only about 50% of what you are talking about.

But, I think the situation described here to me won't work perfectly. Here's why:

I need the logo to be a transition/progression through three logos: 2 product logos that we carry, and our company logo.
Clearly, there is no 'stock' logo here that will work for this.
I have each of the logos I want to use as clip-art on my PC, so will that help?

I want it to fade in, and fade through each of the three logos, and hold on my company logo for a longer time, then fade out. If I could add some animation (spinning/fading in, or something catchy like that) that would be nice too, but not strictly necessary.

Also, I am running XP, and I have WMM 2.1

Thank you.
There are so many links on just this post alone that I will die of old age before I get to use them all.
I am new to this forum and I have already found so much information that I no longer feel
that I have to go and buy a "real" movie editor.
Awesome forum. Thanks to all.

Hey guys, I am having a bit of trouble-
I followed the above instructions for making and putting an xml into the AddOnTFX folder, but how do I access my handy new effect?
When I close and open WMM I can't find the effect in the normal effect area. Is it in a seperate spot?

The files you download from the FX Archive are executable files. Double click on the file after you download it and that will open a wizard that will take you through the rest of the steps required to install the effects or transitions.

Also, the effects and transitions that you can currently download from the FX Archive work only with versions 2.6 and below of Movie Maker.

Thank u very much for reply! I work in Maker 2.1.4026.0
XP SP3

It comes not as u are saying. Lets explain. For ex. fades transitions.
http://www.thefxarchive.com/index.php?category=List&os=XP&type=Transitions&id=Fade

I download from "here" and run the package directly. It finds itself at C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX

I rename it - by adding Fades - just before saving. AddOnTFX_Fades.
Coz I have many transitions saved in the same folder Shared and when save a new it comes with same name AddOnTFX. So have to give them different names.

When I go to Shared and in my folder AddOnTFX i find one HML file inside, XP_Effects_Fade_1_1 (looks like a globe pic on it)

Then I create a notepad from Start menu, drag my HML there, get a code, and do Save As to that folder AddOnTFX_Fades. I can't choose any other format except for .txt
So I save like .txt It says "File XP_Effects_Fade_1_1 HML exist already, do you want to subsitute it?" I say yes, save, go to the map AddOnTFX_Fades and see the same "globe" HML file XP_Effects_Fade_1_1

Nothing changed. Upon running Maker nothing new appeared in it either *(((((

The xml file must be stored in the AddOnTFX folder; you cannot store it in another folder in the Shared folder or (as far as I know) even in a subfolder of the AddOnTFX folder. Do the transitions show up if you run the installer without any changes to where the xml file is stored?

Nope, just tried. Can't find any new transitions (I downloaded fades :http://www.thefxarchive.com/index.php?category=List&os=XP&type=Transitions&id=Fade) in Movie maker *blaaah*

I looked in videoeffects and video transitions. Should be there, right?
Maybe it's about how I save notepad? It saves as .txt, though saying "hml already exist, wanna substitute?" After doing this i find just "globe" file in the AddOnTFX folder..however I've already told that..

I think I stick to Vegas instead...impossible headache those extra features for Movie Maker. Can't be THAT complicated but it it grrrrrr

The file you downloaded is an executable file which you just need to run and let it install the files in the AddOnTFX folder. There's no need for you to do anything in Notepad with those files or the files that are installed by that executable file.

XML ARCHIVE NOT WORKING , FOLDER ADDONTFX
Posted: 06 Mar 2010 01:28 PM
I try to do al theser step by step :

I Have Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with Service Pack 3, aqui traere una imagen del Windows Movie Maker pues dice dos versiones y no se cual es la que tengo

cholito - those are the steps you would follow if you were trying to add a specifc set of xml code to Movie Maker. If you've downloaded an executable file, then you just need to run the installer to install the items.
