ChromaKey, Greenscreen, and Clay-mation!!!!!
Posted: 14 Jul 2005 03:51 AM
Hello, I recently obtained the Transition effects "Green Screen" and "Chroma Black, Green, White, and Blue" for the WMM. I was wonderring would it be possible to film a sort of "clay-mation" movie with action figures in front of a green screen? You know like Gumby, or that really weird "Action Heroes Now" show that used to be on Nicolodeon?

Now, I have made about 6 of these types of movies, however, I 've never tried to incorporate a greeen screen. I recently discovered that I can add audio to my clay-mation films through WMM. (I knew there was someway to add sound effects to the films, I just never thought of using WMM until I searched for it.)

I'm kinda having trouble with my green screen; I know the green screen wall has to be uniform in color and light. I made my own green screen using paper, I just have to incorporate the "uniform light."

What I want to do is make a "clay-mation" movie while using a green screen effect. I just can't seem to properly use the "Green Screen" transition properly, I don't know what's wrong?

Oh yeah! I forgot, Do you have to use a video clip as the (greenscreen)background for another video clip or photo? And Can I use a photo as the (greenscreen)background, or even use a video clip as the (greenscreen)background for a photo?

Please, anyone, Help...

The general method of using a ChromaKey transition is:
1) Place your greenscreen clip on the timeline
2) Place the replacement clip (photo or video) on the timeline. The photo or the video should be around the same length as the original greenscreen clip.
3) Place the ChromaKey transition between the two.
4) Next drag the transition so it covers almost all of the original clip. (You can't actually get it all the way otherwise the clips switch positions and the transition is removed.)

Also, I would suggest using the "non-red" chroma key transition... since it allows for more tolerance in the actual color of the screen. The others (Black, White, Green, Blue, etc.) expect an exact RGB color and you are unlikely to get that with shadows, uneven lighting, etc. as much as you might try. I forget the exact XML but it is the one without the RGB value set.

Thank you for helping. Except, one thing, I keep having the problem that when I set the replacement and the original greenscreen clip to be covered by the Chromakey transition it only shows a little bit of the 1st clip then goes to the next clip. It does not remove the greenscreen.

Maybe I've got the order of the clips backwards? Try switching them and putting the background first and then the greenscreen clip? Or maybe the greenscreen isn't being detected correctly? I haven't done green-screening for awhile, so I don't remember. Maybe somebody like dlk will have a better answer.

The order should be...
Add the replacement clip, then add the green screen clip,
then use the non-red transition, and drag as much
as you can.

Can anyone post the non-red code please? I seem to have the blue, black, green, etc but I don't have one called "non-red". From what I'm reading, this one may work better for me. My search here only seems to refer to it but I can't find a post that shows the actual code.
Thanks

Hey how did you get the Transition effects "Green Screen" and "Chroma Black, Green, White, and Blue" for the WMM? I've always wanted to use a green screen for my movies.

just a tiny helper for newbies such as my self (first post) make sure you set the transition time in your options to as short a time as possible, otherwise it fades in the effect.
or don't, and have ghosts appear.
your choice.

btw thanks so much for the codes, help, etc. i'm digging the chroma key.

Theres a freeware called Wax 2.0 that has a tolerance setting so the green (or whichever color you select) doesn't have to be exact. I haven't tried chroma key in MM, but Wax seems to do a pretty good job for me. Not sure if it has any drawbacks, so you might ask the experienced folks here about it...
