Worth the download?
Posted: 04 Sep 2009 08:30 AM
I hope this question is not redundant, but I searched the forum and did not see a clear cut answer.

I am a 5+ year user of WMM (all versions) I am comfortable and like v.6 on Vista but the prospects of an "upgraded" version sound great. It seems however that I would be disappointed with the removal of the timeline feature which I used exclusively (never liked the storyboard). I want all the new transitions and titling features but it seems that I would be giving up too much. Anybody have thoughts or advice.
Also: could I down load this version and still have WMM v.6 on my computer simultaneously without conflicts?? Then I could atleast pick and choose features from each.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Download it now. It'll install and run on your Vista system without effecting MM6.

From your perspective you'll probably consider it a "different" version, not an "upgraded" one.

I've been using WMM about as long as you. With the help of some add-on effects and a lot of trial and error, I've been able to produce some fairly complex narrative short films. Some very critical "arty-farty" types I know have been impressed with my results (and shocked when I tell them I used Movie Maker on a Windows PC), and I've been very happy using only version 6 on Vista.

Now, I've been examining and experimenting with the new "Live" verion of WMM lately, and in my opinion, it is lacking in significant ways. Even the latest release version. I am trying to keep an open mind, and to continue experimenting, but the more I play with it the less I like it. Unless the next release of WLMM has a timeline, I won't mess with it any longer.

Which Movie Maker is better? Bottom line: use what you are currently comfortable with, if it gives you the results you want. For my money, I'm sticking with Vista and WMM 6.

I've been using windows movie maker since 2000 or whenever it first came out which I believe was in 2000 because that's when it was first introduced in ME. Anyway 9 years and several releases it got a little better but nothing spectacular.
The new windows live will definitely feel more like a downgrade than an upgrade. However I think you should download it just to feel for it yourself. Obviously opinions vary. And since it doesn't interfere with your current WMM then just download and try yourself. You might like it who knows.

I have not used WMM for about 5 years and have been useing a 'bought' editor, after upgradeing to windows 7 64 bit my editor did not work properly, so while thinking what to do next I downloaded the free WLMM, allthough simple it can edit SD and HD h264 files 1920 x1080 30fps and also 60fps and still run smooth with transitions added which I know the 2.6 version of WMM cannot do, I have tried it freezes after a few seconds, also some 'bought' editors cannot this, this is a BIG plus for this program.
The new titles/transitions and effects are good, and if you use the free Windows DVD Maker you can end up with an entertaining video and menu's, I think if the time line was brought back it would be a better editing program but as it stands it is still a solid editor that can handle HD video's, it's a simple editing program but works well

I've been an XP user and just bought a laptop with Windows 7. I need to do some simple video for my company but am very disappointed with WLMM. I have yet to figure out the whole process. But after I captured the video from the miniDV tape using PowerDirector bundled by HP, I clicked "Edit", it showed sequences of the "first clip". Although when I clicked "Play", the video plays normally. I'm at a loss as to how I can edit the video if I can only see the static image of the first clip all along. I miss the timeline a lot and downloaded WMM 2.6 and acquire video using Power Director since WMM 2.6 doesn't have this facility. I hope to learn from everyone how I can use WMLL better.
