Well, there is an "invert" param for the "key transition",
which seems to imply it would reverse the operation of
which pixels become transparent. However, coding the
param has no effect on the chroma transition as far as I can tell.
So I think the answer is no.

My question though is... where are you going with this idea?
I could see perhaps, trying to isolate a color, and then boosting
it somehow(using the "standard" class like you did with your green alien?)....
so...maybe this is back to the red dress on a grayscaled image.
I wonder if aliasing would ruin it anyway...even if you could get that far.

I think it works for KeyType=0 (i.e. pure color chroma keying). I tried the following two transitions with this image. Both transitions seem to work as expected.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C5B19592-145E-11D3-9F04-006008039E37}" >

<Transition name="Key: Red" iconid="0" >
<Param name="KeyType" value="0" />
<Param name="RGB" value="0xFF0000" />
</Transition>

<Transition name="Key: Red Invert" iconid="0" >
<Param name="KeyType" value="0" />
<Param name="RGB" value="0xFF0000" />
<Param name="Invert" value="-1" />
</Transition>

</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste the xml code into notepad and Save As chromakey.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Create the AddOnTFX folder if necessary. Confirm the file has .xml extension by turning off the "hide extensions of known file types" from Explorer > Tools > Folder options > View. Restart WMM.

As noted previously, this chroma key implementation only works properly for the color value exactly as specified in the code. The Similarity parameter doesnt work which limits the usefulness of it for any real life footage.

Rehan,
I must admit, I use the non-red key version so exclusively,
I didn't even think to try a different version. (although the doc
does indicate it should also work with the non-red key)
However, as you say...similarity doesn't work, and edges
are so stair-stepped, so I would be curious to see what Danfah
can make of this.

A program called Wax, which has been mentioned on this
forum before(by C:\) has a just released a new version.
This version has a chroma key plugin, with invert and
tolerance. This might work for your needs, if you want to
give it a try.(it's freeware) www.debugmode.com

The chroma key plugin is very simple to use, but if someone
has an AVI they would like to post...I could see what I can
make of it. I just don't have any good samples. Well, I do
have my son is a yellow shirt. I might give that a go.

Ok...this is what I came up with using Wax on a
video with a yellow shirt.

yellow

Now... keep in mind 2 things.
Firstly, yellow may not be a good test subject. I had to tone
back the tolerance because too many things must have been
close to yellow, including facial tones. So I didn't get(nor try for)
a solid yellow reveal. Since red is one of the basic channels
of RGB, and yellow is a mixture, red may be easier to isolate.
Secondly, you face the same problems you have with all
chroma key for DV. Poor lighting and shadows quickly take the
yellow out of yellow(if that makes sense). So good lighting
and pure color will help.

No jaggies here though. Looks natural.

Here is another variation, using invert on the original
to turn the yellow to blue, and then keying the blue.

blue

Of course, your wouldn't have to chroma over a greyscaled image.
There are many ways to make use of this.

I suppose that's a problem, and know I am guilty of glossing
over one or two minor issues. This Wax program doesn't
like WMV files, and I don't think it likes the AVI files output
from MM2, although I am not certain about that. I couldn't
get them to work...but I was running it on a WinME machine
where my "fast" graphics card is installed. I might be missing the
right codecs on that machine. But I know it doesn't support WMV
format at all. I was going to send the author an email, he
seems like he is open to user requests(if it's even possible)
I just used captured footage...pre MM2 touching it. I would think
that is not too much of a hassle if you are willing to go outside
MM2 anyway, and then use the rendered footage in MM2.
Maybe that's a bad assumption on my part.

Ok...for anyone interested in this program, the author told me
that he plans to support WMV files in the next release.
(not sure what his release schedule is though)
