Some Help Please!
Posted: 30 Jun 2005 09:03 PM
Hey! I was wondering would anyone have any tips on how I could do this effect? http://www.magga-james.co.uk/videos/milehighintro.wmv

And also if anyone has xml codes for a two way split screen effect, but i would prefer it if the videos were smaller so you can still see the whole video on both sides with a black background! Is this possible? Thanks!

When you say "this effect" do you mean the wipe transition? Or do you mean having 3 videos playing simultaneously?

You could use Rehan's PIP+ effects to get two on the screen at once, but you would have to do another pass (save, reload, apply another PIP effect) to get the third one. Check out these forums the "Brady Bunch" effect. Or search for "PIP+".

I do have XML for the two side-by-side videos. Check out the following picture.

Side-by-side Videos Screenshot

Assuming this is what you want, I was able to use a modified version of my previously posted "Cube rotate" transition. I set the progress to 50% (0.5) so that you end up with two videos showing side-by-side, each squished into their respective rectangles.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{F088DE73-BDD0-4E3C-81F8-6D32F4FE9D28}" >
<Transition name="Side by Side" iconid="41" comment="DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Stretch">
<Param name="stretchStyle" value="PUSH" />
<Param name="progress" value="0.5" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy this code into Notepad, then save it in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX as sidebyside.xml. Restart Windows Movie Maker.

To use it:
1) Put your videoclip1 and videoclip2 on the timeline.
2) Drag the new "Side by Side" transition to the timeline between the two clips.
3) Drag videoclip2 to the left so it almost completely covers videoclip1. (You can't go all the way otherwise it moves clip2 in front of clip1.)

Note: this actually puts clip2 on the left and clip1 on the right. If you want them the other way, then put videoclip2 on the timeline first, followed by videoclip1. Sorry, it's a side-effect of the 'PUSH' transition which moves right.

Tell me if this does what you need. Cool

Thankyou! Thats great!!

The PIP+ confuses me! do you have to pay for it?

Would you have any more cool effects like the one i requested? Im making a movie soon and would love a few effects that show two videos playing side by side or on top of the screen and the bottom! thanks!

PIP+ was created by Rehan (view user rehan) and his $8 price is reasonable for the time he spent developing the package. Although, I think the package allows you to do static PIP effects without having to pay the registration fee. I

f you have other effects you'd like, and I find it fun to try to create them, I'll probably try to do them here and post them. Just give me some exact details on what you might like to use. At the moment, my only fee is appreciation. Smiley

Since Rehan already has packages for Panning/Zooming and multiple videos (Picture-in-Picture), you probably won't see me duplicating his efforts. But other transitions, that's a different story.

I did an example of what I really really want!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y14/rkyle336/rachel_screendump.jpg

I put arrows to show which way the video enters the screen and as you can see it shows different sizes of videos on different parts of the screen with the black background. I would even be happy with 2 or 3 videos being able to play like this on the screen, as long as 1 and 2 could be as I have shown!

Is this at all possible? Thanks!

That effect is not "available" anywhere, but PIP+ could
be used to create that look. Depending on exactly what you
want, placing #1 and #2 on the screen like your sample could be
fairly simple. You could also make a clip with #3 and #4
and combine them in a 2nd pass to replicate what you have
shown us. I say "depending" because in general, PIP+ fits the
entire video clip in a window. So four windows of that size and
shape would be no problem with 2 or 3 passes. BUT...your sample
has window overlays....the rectangle clip is not squeezed to fit in the
rectangle, a rectangle is overlayed on top of a certain section of the clip.
This can also be done in PIP+...but you need to use borders or
overlays, and extra passes to make it happen. But it can be done.

There is also something called the Compositor Transition, which can be
used to create subrectangles on top of your background. This thing
is difficult to work with because the preview window doesn't always
show you what you will end up with. I have used it...but avoid it now.
It also requires mulltiple passes, but if cost is an issue, this is part of MM2

No download needed, you just code it up. Custom fit to your needs.
Here is a sample, but I am not offering to help customize.
This stuff gives me a headache.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{BB44391D-6ABD-422f-9E2E-385C9DFF51FC}">
<Transition name="PIP-320x240-tight-UL" iconid="88">
<Param name="SrcOffsetX" value="0" />
<Param name="SrcOffsetY" value="0" />
<Param name="SrcWidth" value="320" />
<Param name="SrcHeight" value="240" />
<Param name="OffsetX" value="0" />
<Param name="OffsetY" value="0" />
<Param name="Width" value="112" />
<Param name="Height" value="84" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="PIP-320x240-Upper" iconid="88">
<Param name="SrcOffsetX" value="0" />
<Param name="SrcOffsetY" value="0" />
<Param name="SrcWidth" value="320" />
<Param name="SrcHeight" value="240" />
<Param name="OffsetX" value="107" />
<Param name="OffsetY" value="20" />
<Param name="Width" value="112" />
<Param name="Height" value="84" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

As usual...copy and paste into notepad, and save as an XML file
in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder

Oh...and the real gotcha here. This will look fine in
the preview window, but if you save the movie
in a format other than 320x240...the window will
not be in the location you expected. So if you want to
create a high quality video(720x480)...you can't see
what you are doing in the preview window.

Sorry ....I only gave you samples of the full movie in the window.
Here is a sample where a smaller portion of the clip shows through
the window. My assumption is you need to do this type of thing.
I would transition to a black background for window1,
create the movie, and load it in for the 2nd pass, and repeat
for windows 3...then 4.

<Transition name="PIP-320x240-Scaled" iconid="88">
<Param name="SrcOffsetX" value="10" />
<Param name="SrcOffsetY" value="20" />
<Param name="SrcWidth" value="160" />
<Param name="SrcHeight" value="120" />
<Param name="OffsetX" value="107" />
<Param name="OffsetY" value="20" />
<Param name="Width" value="112" />
<Param name="Height" value="84" />
</Transition>

The SCR params control the video screen. The next 4 control the window.

PIP+ is downloadable free and can be used free for this type of static PIP effects/transitions. The registration only allows one to use movements of video A and B (with more than one animation keys).

Hi Rehan,
I didn't think PIP+ lends itself to showing only a portion
of the video within the window. I mean, you can't do
something like this natively with PIP+

dance

I had to jump through flaming hoops to make this with PIP+.
Or have I been missing something?

This looks awsome... Great work.

But yes PIP+ doesnt allow you to select portions directly. The way to do it is to use a pip+ effect to enlarge the part of the video to fit to whole screen and then a pip+ transition to resize and place it where you want.

Ideally the both steps should be doable in one go. Thats another feature for next release perhaps... or may be another new effect to allow all the rectangles definable in one go!
