Pan Right Effect?
Posted: 09 Feb 2004 03:05 PM
Any ideas how to create a Pan Right effect? Here is a brief description of what I'm looking to do....

If you have ever watched some of the PBS historical specials, you will have undoubtedly seen an image where a camera has zoomed in on a picture, and is slowly panning over the faces of the picture.

Another example is when you have the camera 'emulate' reading, in essense panning over the sentence from left to right.

I'm looking for a 'simple3d' effect to do this rather than a transition, because trial and error on doing this as a transition would be daunting.

I have this idea, but not sure how to control where to 'start' the effect in the image.

I'll experiment with a simple3d effect whereby I'll set MoveA = "Left", MoveSpeedA to some small number, and an InitialScaleA of something like 1.2. This will create an effect that starts in the clip zoomed (no change in zooming), and pushes the image to the left.

RevolveCamera may do it too.

Also, the above method zooms into the picture at the center I believe, and I may want the 'zoom' to be someplace not centered.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

The Pan/Zoom effects package from Pixelan should do that well. There's a link to download it on my Setup > Software page.

I'm trying to avoid purchasing the Pixelan effects. Not because I'm cheap, but because I've found that most of their effects (transition effects in particular) can be built manually. I have a whole lot more fun building the transitions and effects myself.

If you know of no way to do it manually, I'll probably bite the pixelan bullet.

I have some notes about custom transitions and effects on the Editing > Video > Transitions and Effects pages of my site. I mostly just note what others are doing and follow their info to test it or use it myself.

Good luck with it.

Here is a pan right effect:

<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Pan Right" iconid="34" comment="Test Pan">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left" />
<Param name="MoveSpeedA" value=".2" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value = "1.5" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value = "1.5" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>

Scale and speed will probably need to be adjusted on the fly to handle specific circumstances, and this effect always starts in the middle of an image/clip. Any thoughts on how to get this to start from the left would be appreciated.

Hi, I see these posts about creating your own effects and I have some simple questions with the hope that someone can give me a walk-thru on creating, installing and using a custom effect. I have searched around the internet and cannot find a complete guide written for Dummies on how to do this from start to finish. I can only find pieces of information that presumes that I already know what to do with this.

1. What do I do with the above code? Do I save it as a text file? What extension? Where do I put it?

2. How do I tell Movie Maker to use it?

3. Where are the GUID and Param names coming from?

I dont expect an answer for all of my questions but when I see posts that say... Here try this:
<EffectDLL guid="{B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF}">
<Effect name="Pan Right" iconid="34" comment="Test Pan">
<Param name="InternalName" value="Simple3D" />
<Param name="MoveA" value="left" />
<Param name="MoveSpeedA" value=".2" />
<Param name="InitialScaleA" value = "1.5" />
<Param name="ScaleA" value = "1.5" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>

I dont have a clue what to do with it :)

Thanks!

Rather than rehash what papajohn.org already has on his site, I suggest you visit his site and the following URL:

Give that a try, and if you have any further questions ask away and I'll be happy to answer.

As yet another alternative, I went with DVDXShow. It has some pretty impressive abilities to do all sorts of Ken Burns pans. You can pick multiple regions of a single image, move from region to region, zooming in and out. You can select any number of images and add transitions/music if desired.

I use it to make a slideshow and then import the movie into my collections. It's probably one of the more expensive options ~$40, but it does provide a lot of flexibility. NOTE: For some unknown reason, it doesn't directly produce to MPG. You have to rename an output file as MPG. A minor inconvenience...

I found what I was looking for. Plus! Photo Story (included in Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition) allows a user to control pans of photos. Rather well too.

is there any way to merge those panning effects from photo story into movie maker so that you can use the effects there?

Hi all,

You may be interested in the announcement of beta trial of my pan zoom effects package here:
