Exactly my problem. I used MP3 for years with MM2.1 and MM6 since January 2008.
As late as a week ago, I developed a project for New Year with music by Abba -MP3, and I had no problem.
It is a new problem, started after a week ago. I posted this problem under Tech Support but so far no feedback.

Here is an explanation to the problem.
My project started with a short video that I muted. Then I added photos with transitions, titles and effects.
When I attempted to add music, as I normally do, it gave me the error that the music file could not be imported into the project.
Just a few days later, I went back to start the project from scratch but this time I did not have a video with sound to start. A video without sound and the previously used pictures followed. Then I selected and imported music without the error.
It seems to me, that when a video is part of the project, mostly at the beginning, muting it, the system doesn't like it and give you the error.
Is this the condition that your error comes up? I was successful in creating, saving and completing the project with MP3 music from beginning to end. No problem.
