XP Green Screen Transition
Posted: 02 Dec 2008 07:31 PM
I've been using a blue screen and blue screen tranisition very successfully. Recently I upgraded my lighting and purchased a larger GREEN Chroma Key background. Haven't been able to get the same results since... So I guess I really didn't upgrade anything!!!

Maybe someone out there can help me figure out where I've gone wrong. Here's what I did.

Found this xml Green Screen transition from a post on the Forum.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{C5B19592-145E-11D3-9F04-006008039E37}" >
<Transition name="Greenscreen" iconid="11">
<Param name="KeyType" value="0" />
<Param name="RGB" value="0x00FF00" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copied it in to notepad then saved it as GreenSceen.xml in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX

Next - Dragged my background image on the timeline then the foreground wmv. Pulled the Green Screen transition between the 2 and extended it so that they overlap. Just like I've done a million times with the Blue Screen transition.

Result = bupkis

I can overlap the images but when I apply the Green Screen transition I only get my green screen wmv and sound.

Any suggestions, advice or tips (short of going back to blue) would be greatly appreciated.

Not what I wanted to hear but I STRONGLY suspect you're correct. Oh well - the background was the cheapest part of the whole deal...

Thanks, DCW

A little late to the party but, do you have a small sample of
video using your "greenscreen" that you could post?
I would be curious to see what it looks like. If you were
really able to get a consistent background color, with no
shadows, you could tweak that transition. The thing is,
your transition expects perfect green.

<Param name="RGB" value="0x00FF00"

Nothing on the red channel, nothing on the blue channel,
and a 255 value on the green channel.

Perhaps your greenscreen produces one consistent
color,but it's not quite 00FF00, and we just need to
figure out what it is.

Again... there are so many variations that getting
an exact match is nearly impossible.

If you want to use white, try applying
the brightness increase effect to your video
If you use black, try brightness decrease.
Here is the XML for black and white.

<Param name="RGB" value="0" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Chroma-White" iconid="11">
<Param name="KeyType" value="0" />
<Param name="RGB" value="0xFFFFFF" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>

for basic xml's you can save them as whatever you like but to find them easier i just recomend "blackscreen" "whitescreen" "chromashade" or something along those lines

Posted: 31 Mar 2009 06:56 PM
I got nothing to work myself. My question now is: If I go purchase a bluescreen specifically for Movie Maker 2.1 usage, then which one should I purchase? I want this to work!!! :))
Thanks for any input anyone can give me.

Four years later...

OK, I'm using Windows 7 with WMM 2.6 and I can't get these transitions to work either. Is there a different way to code these? I really like the hack, but it doesn't work for me. It simply does nothing. The second image just shows up and the blue or green screened image is gone. I tried the built in transitions and they work, so I know I've got it set up basically right. Thanks.

The only chroma-keying that works well in WMM 2.x is blue screen, not green screen. And even that can be problematic. Check TheFXArchive.com for "Improved Bluescreen" if you want to continue trying with WMM 2.x.

However, is there any reason you don't just switch to WMM 6.0 and ShaderTFX (view post 126998)? That has chroma-keying (blue screen and green screen) and allows for different levels of similarity matching.
