Effects/Transistions?
Posted: 14 Jun 2005 10:20 PM
I tell you what people need to do..

Need to stop making those $tupid Transitions and start making More Video effects, video filters, stuff like that for those people who cant run programs, like Video Vegas, Adobe Premiere, and othe SOny products..

I was really only looking for a program with Lots of Video Effects ( preferably FX) and a easy way to put them into the video.. AND NOT MAKE THEM LAST THRUOUT THE ENTIRE VIDEO..

I mean..

How hard can it be, i have Cyberlink Powerdirector 3 and it has the EASIEST way to Time your Video effects.. on the other hand it only has like 12-13 of the Gaye$t Video effects ever.

So what some people need to do is make ONLY VIDEO EFFECTS AND FILTERS for programs like..

Windows Movie Maker..
Cyberlink Power director 2 and 3..
and some of the more Non-Popular ones..

The only reason i am steaming out here, is because i have a small Game video that i recorded and i wanted to put some cool Video effects in it ( NOT TRANSISTIONS) but when i drag a effect into it, it last thru out the entier video.. THATS NOT WHAT I WANTED..

i looked thru the help file.. tried to figure out how to do it properly.. but they put some Jibberish on thier that i cant understand.. need to put Pictures or maybe even a video of how to do it for those people who suffer from CRS disease ( Cant remember Squat)...

Just had to blow off some steam.. been holding in for a loooong time.

I aucutally use WMM 2 do really well with it, but not near enough Video effects
(e.g) <---> Lightning, SMoke, Particules, fire, rain.. cool stuff like that.

I would tend to agree.

I always keep trying to use some transitions, but most end up looking cheesy. IMHO much of the time the use of a lot of transitions just makes movies look amateurish. Unless the transition calls for a cool transition effect, I tend to do very simple ones anyway.

But then again my opinion. YMMV

I will take the Papajohn approach: ignore the noise and
treat you with more respect than you have so far earned.
Let's just try to address your problem.

You say:
"when i drag a effect into it, it last thru out the entier video..
THATS NOT WHAT I WANTED.."

From the timeline view, cut the clip where you want the effect
to start, then cut the clip where you wish the effect to end.
You should now have 3 clips on your timeline. before-key-after
Now apply your effect to the "key" clip. Simple as that.

And if you have a specific effect you wish to see, simply ask.
It might be impossible, but I don't think anyone is holding out on us

Ok...still trying to get you to specify what you want.
I understand you wanted to vent, but what effect were you
trying to apply in the other editing programs, that you would
like to see in MM2?

Fair enough. You did make that general statement.
I will be looking for the premiere of your latest movie:

"Where there's Smoke there's Fire....
The Cool Adventures of Mr. Lightning and Mrs. Rain"

dlk
Actually, I think many of those can be done with a transition.

There have been several posts on creating effects like lightning, rain, smoke, etc. Just do a search and check out the "Share Your Effects/Transitions" forum, too. Most of them involve overlaying a video track of the effect and compositing it with the underlying track.

In addition, if you really are into effects, you probably want to look into a 3rd-party product like Particle Illusion or the like. WMM2 is a pretty basic editor and certainly has more transitions and effects per dollar paid than a lot of the other editors. I also have Pinnacle Studios Plus 9.0 but I get annoyed because most of the "neat" effects and transitions are locked up and they want you to pay an additional fee to use.

I still don't understand your comment about "effects having to be applied to the whole movie". I haven't seen that being the case in Movie Maker or Pinnacle Studios. And since this is a WMM forum, I too had assumed that you meant WMM was deficient in this respect, so I wouldn't be so hard on dlk who was trying to be helpful.

Blaine, im not trying to be hard on dlk..

i guess what i am trying to say, is that everytime i open up like the demo to SOny vegas 4 or 6, i Import the movie , drag it into the timeline, go to "videoFX" effects,and pick one and drag it to the video.. But it last thru out th entire video, i have tried to read the help on Video effects, but it is way to difficult for me to understand, i might only want the effect to last 20 seconds during a certain part of the movie.. I guess i am studpid in that way.. i need Pictures or a video showing me how to do it...

I have no problems with WMM at all..

Kathokatho has a rather pricey software program that
generates these images. She has generously offered to
post various effects, so you can download them whenever
she posts them. She has also offered to take request.
Those post refererenced above should link back to instructions
on how to use these, but if you tell me which one in particular is
of interest...I "could" post a step by step tutorial, but
it is pretty basic. If someone else wishes to post the
steps...feel free, I'm not that way. And besides, my English skills
are lacking. (can an American born in Wisconsin use that excuse?)

Most of these "effects" are really accomplished using a compositing transition. The following post has lots of details on creating a "nuclear blast" effect (a big white blast of light) overlaying your video.
view post 18036

The summary of how to do this:

ACT I: Create New Compositing Transitions (only needs to be done once)
1) If you don't already have a directory called C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX create it.
2) Copy the following code into Notepad
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{9A43A844-0831-11D1-817F-0000F87557DB}" >
<Transition name="Comp A add B" iconid="0" comment="DXCOMPFUNC_A_ADD_B">
<Param name="Function" value="9" />
</Transition>
<Transition name="Comp B add A" iconid="0" comment="DXCOMPFUNC_B_ADD_A">
<Param name="Function" value="25" />
</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

3) Save the file as composite.xml. Note: the .xml extension is important.
4) Restart Windows Movie Maker.

ACT II: Download and import the overlaying effect clip.
5) If you haven't already, download the clip(s) you want to overlay. Check the prior posts and look at Kathy's website. For example, let's say you want to make a matrix effect with falling characters, try her 2muchdata.avi file.
6) Import the clip(s) into Windows Movie Maker. I like to move them from the individual collections that are created into a single 'Compositing Collection' that I have created, but you can do whatever.

ACT III: Put it all together.
7) Place your original clip on the timeline.
8) Place the overlay clip right after it.
9) Choose the 'Comp A Add B' Transition and place it between the two.
10) Drag your second clip, so that it overlays as much of the first clip as possible.

Tada! Cool

Try it out and then if you have specific follow-up questions, post a reply. The whole point is to just feel free to experiment and that is how you'll learn to do this kind of stuff.

Anyway, I tried the above thing.. and it worked great.. Just one other question..

After i drag the second video into themain video..is there a way that i can get the second video to just show in the bottom left hand corner of the main video.. ( kinf of like another video track, but just adjustable)?

Try it out and then if you have specific follow-up questions, post a reply.
4 years to get back with a follow-up question!
Surely this is some sort of record? Perplexed

Does changing your username from Lanshire to Lanshire12 in 4 years suggest that you were only 8 when you made the first rant?

Quite a lot has changed in those 4 years on the WMM front but I think Rehan's PIP Plus was already out in 2005. You should be able to apply a custom effect to shrink your second video to wherever you like.

I'll get out of here now since I'm one of those annoying people who contribute custom transitions and was guilty of helping start the frivolous pastime of making custom titles. Embarassed

I use Firefox+Greasemonkey scripts for easier editing of forum posts, FAQs and displaying embedded images Wink
