Auto Selecting Clips and sizing them
Posted: 14 Jun 2005 06:42 PM
Hello Im making a movie and I used TMPEnc To get each frame. Now I have about 2k Frames in WMM and what im trying to do is sizethem all to be like 1/4 a second. I can autoselect them all but Im not sure how to trim them to be all the same at once. Anyone have any ideas? Trimming 2k frames 1 by 1 is tedious and im sure there is a easier way to do this. Thanks

Are you just trying to make the movie appear slower? I guess I don't get what you are trying to accomplish. I'm sure there must be more efficient ways to do what you want to do, maybe even outside of WMM. Are you trying to take a movie that is, say, 30fps and make it 4fps?

Basically i have a movie recorded of me fighting someone in a game. Im going to be playing a song to the movie. When the songs peeds up i wanna speed up the video alot. When its not fast in the song i wanna slow it down create kinda a fast forward slow motion effect.

As you may or may not know, you can apply video effects to "speed up" and "slow down" your clips. WMM comes with two effects called appropriately "Speed up, Double" and "Slow down, Half". Rather than dealing with all the individual frames, I would use your original movie but break it into clips. Then apply the speed up or slow down effects to the individual clips as needed.

To apply a video effect:
1) Select your clip in the timeline
2) Right-click and choose Video Effects...
3) Choose the effect you want to add (e.g. "Slow down, Half")
4) Click Add>> and then OK

Now, you are probably next going to ask, can you do variable speeds (i.e. other than just half and double)? If you are willing to create custom effects, the answer is yes.

First, make sure you have a directory called:
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX
If you don't, create it.

Next, open Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and paste the following code:
<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}">
<Effect name="Slow down, 25%" iconid="31" speed="0.8" comment="Slow down, 25%">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Slow down, 50%" iconid="31" speed="0.67" comment="Slow down, 50%">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Slow down, x3" iconid="31" speed="0.33" comment="Slow down, x3">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Slow down, x4" iconid="31" speed="0.25" comment="Slow down, x4">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Slow down, x6" iconid="31" speed="0.17" comment="Slow down, x6">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Slow down, x8" iconid="31" speed="0.13" comment="Slow down, x8">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, 25%" iconid="32" speed="1.25" comment="Speed up, 25%">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, 50%" iconid="32" speed="1.5" comment="Speed up, 50%">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, x3" iconid="32" speed="3.0" comment="Speed up, x3">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, x4" iconid="32" speed="4.0" comment="Speed up, x4">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, x6" iconid="32" speed="6.0" comment="Speed up, x6">
</Effect>
<Effect name="Speed up, x8" iconid="32" speed="8.0" comment="Speed up, x8">
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Save the file in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX with a name of speed.xml. Note: the extension .xml is important!

Now, restart Windows Movie Maker and you should have new video effects for speeding up and slowing down your clips at speeds of 25%, 50%, Half/Double, x3, x4, x6, x8.

Hope this helps!

-=Blaine=-

Some examples of how to calculate your own speeds:
30% faster = 1.30
30% slower = 0.769 (1/1.30)

75% faster = 1.75
75% slower = 0.5714 (1/1.75)

x10 faster = 10.0
x10 slower = 0.10 (1/10.0)

Hey Considerate Dude,
Thanks for this post! I'm editing some wakeboard video, and it comes out best at 80%. I've looked all over for the effect, and I was stoked to find your solution.

And I'm assuming you figured out how to do that with a value of 1.8... Good job! Thanks for the feedback.

when I copy and paste what is above in wordpad and save it .... IN THE SAVE AS TYPE box ..I have those choices :

-Rich text format ( RTF)
-text document
-text document MS-DOS format
-Unicode Text document

Which one should I select ? so that I can see the effects in movie maker once I saved it in C:\program files\ movie maker\shared\AddonTFX

Thank you :)

For those that are afraid of dreaded code then just apply Slow Down/Speed Up effects more than once until you find the desired result. (Or go to my beginner's XML guide).

thelostlegend - welcome to the forums.

It sounds like you have Vista and the speed effects in this thread are for Windows XP. See considerate_guy's blog for a set for Vista or use the Vista Custom Effects Generator on this page to generate your own set.
