Video Overlaying Video?
Posted: 27 May 2005 12:41 AM
Gday,

This is my situation:

I am making a video where during the intro i have a sun rising with the credits rolling. But that is a bit boring. I was wondering if it is possible to have faded footage playing in the back ground?? The fade transition would be perfect but thats the prob, its a transition. Is it possibble to pasue to transition so the fade effect is constant??

gosh hope that makes sense. I have been looking on the forums for an answer to my question . some people have asked similar questions but without an answer and the threads are quite old.

If this is at all possible anyones help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Kifaru

hey,

within 5 mins of making this post i have found the solution! silly me what a newb! :P

If anyone else is newby like me and is wondering how to do this, its simple:

Just click and drag the one clip over another and it will interlace them. If you want only the sound of one of the clips simply right click on the audio of the clips sound in which you dont want and then click mute.

Hope this will help anyone else out there.

Cheers

I am thinking this is more of a preview problem. There
is probably a bit of CPU required(or perhaps I/O) to render
the 2 clips together, and preview(real time) can't keep up.
Try saving it as a movie, and see what that looks like.

Thanks for your help dlk. I saved the movie and in runs perfectly, so i guess your right about the cpu required.

thanks again for your help.

Hey again,

im having one more prob with this effect. After the end of the transition for some reason there is a glitch for a few frames. I have made the overlaying video fade out and as soon as the fade finishes the screen goes black for a couple frames and then continues onto the orignal film. There is no glitch in the audio. I have tried as many ways as possible to get past this. i have tried having the overlaying footage with the fade out and also without. i have made sure that the original film dosent have a "fade in" effect anywhere on the timeline. I cant see the glitch in the preview so im not sure what the problem could be.

Thanks again for all your help

As with all the transitions and effects listed in these forums:

1) Copy the code and paste it into Notepad.
2) Save the code in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX\ with a file name that ends in .xml (rather than .txt). (If the directory doesn't exist, you'll need to create it beforehand.)
3) Restart Movie Maker for the transition (or effect) to appear.

Kif,
Not sure I understand what your new problem is.
I think you are saying that you applied "fade out",
and no you get a black frame or 2. That is the way
fade out work. If you simple put 2 clips on the timeline
and fade out the 1st clip...you will get a black frame.
So perhaps it should be called "fade to black".
So...it's sounds like you want to have your cake
and eat it too. You want the fade transition to be
frozen for a while...and then you want it to fade away.
I think you can do this with PIP+
So....let me leave "my post" for a minute...and put
on my XML coder's hat....tick tick tick(time passing)
(9:50 - CT)
.............(more time passes)
(9:57 - CT)
Ok, maybe this is what you want. You need PIP+
It is 50% transparency...and fades away in the last 10% of the overlay

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1033" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
<Transitions>
<TransitionDLL guid="{4EF98DF5-794F-4fd3-8E77-559F82C8D10C}">
<Transition name="PIP+ Transparent-then fade" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value=" 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 0.5;
0.8, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 0.5;
1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 0.0;"
/>

</Transition>
</TransitionDLL>
</Transitions>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Ooops... "fades away over the last 20%"

I had tried 10% and that didn't really show a fade.
You can adjust it to meet you needs.
The 0.5 and 0.0 at the end of the 3 lines is the % of opacity.
The 0.8 at the start of the 2nd line delimites when the
fading will start. Technically...it's the fact that from time
0.0 to 0.8 the opacity is constant at 0.5, and then from
0.8 to 1.0 the opacity goes to 0.0

hope this makes sense. Some of this is hard to put into words

Thanks a lot for providing the GUID for Fade effect as I was in search of it from last 5 days. I was basically mixing clips using Directshow Editing Services. I found almost all kind of effects but this one was not found anywhere.

Thanks once again,
