Imported MPG videos don't play (just get black screen)
Posted: 12 Apr 2008 08:48 PM
Hi,
I'm having a problem playing my MPG videos I've imported from Sony Handycam (using Sony Motion Picture Browser) in Movie Maker.

They import fine but when I go to preview them, the preview screen is black and no sound. It appears they have been recognised as Audio files, as they can't be added to the Storyboard, only the Timeline.

I can confirm the MPG don't play in Windows Media Player 11 also. I get "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there might be a problem with your sound or video device. Try installing an updated device driver."

In Device Manager, I have made sure all the latest driver are installed.

To make matters worse the MPG videos can preview fine in Sony Motion Picture Browser, so I'm a bit at a lose to why this happening.

Do anybody know what the problem could be how to fix it?

FYI, the product versions:
Windows Vista Business SP1
Windows Movie Maker 6.0

welcome to the forum...

the business edition of Vista doesn't include the new Microsoft MPEG2 codec.... so it would be about having the codec needed, and the same issue as with XP, needing to convert the files to ones that work in Movie Maker.

Codecs that work in Sony software don't necessarily work in Microsft software.

Would you suggest I download and installed something like, K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (http://www.codecguide.com/about_mega.htm), to resolve this problem or is converting to AVI the best option.

I didn't use Movie Maker in XP, so this is all new to me sorry.

Cheers.

Personally I recommend the conversion to DV-AVI route... codec packs often don't provide the solution and result in more issues than they resolve.

Ok I'm happy to go down the conversion route then!.

Could it be possible for you to recommend a good, and free MPEG to AVI converter please?

I've done a Google search and there are loads on offer. Some look better (and more reliable!) than others, and I worried I might install some dodgy software.

Thanks for all your advise and help.
