Welcome to the forums.

Movie Maker doesn't support that format - try converting them to wmv format or re-encode them as an avi file with one of the codecs listed as 'friendly' to MM on PapaJohn's website (see the "Import Source Movie Files > Video > Video Codecs" page).

mkv to wmv

You can use Windows Movie Maker to transcode an mkv file to wmv. However this is not ideal since Movie Maker does not support 5.1 sound. Also, the gray letterboxing is annoying. I don't know why it doesn't default to black.

You'll need Haali Media Splitter installed for the video which Movie Maker will use and the AC3 decoder for the audio. Most of the time you'll need to go into the AC3 configuration and make some changes but maybe not for Movie Maker since it doesn't have many options. For a one-click converting solution it's pretty nice though.

If the above solutions still don't help you out. An ultimate soulution here I'd suggest is to convert MKV to Windows Movie Maker more compatible WMV or AVI format. It taks some time, but can solve the issue anyhow.
