Possible to add black outlines to subtitle font?
Posted: 01 Apr 2008 04:26 PM
Hey,

I've only recently started to work with WMM and I'm not a pro at all!

I'm adding my own subtitles to videos. This works fine. However, it is difficult to find a colour for the subtitles that reads well against light and dark backgrounds.

Thus, I'd like to add white or yellow subs with a black outline. Is that at all possible?? How?

I'd be very grateful for your help!

Greetz

If you are on XP, there actually is a subtle outline on the standard subtitle. You can't do much to enhance it though.

In Vista, the 'Outline' doesn't work correctly and until they fix that, no amount of XML can change the behavior. You could enable shadows though.

Yes, I'm on Vista. :(

Could you maybe explain how I enable shadows? I can't find that function...

It would have to be done in custom XML code. Take a look at some of the custom subtitle options in the "Share Your Vista..." forums, that might fit your needs. If not we can work on a custom version with a basic shadow.

Thank you for the answer!

I wanted to try out some of those options. I've read that I need to copy the code as an xml-file into the addontfx-folder.

Now the problem is that I don't have this folder in my shared folder... Can I just create it? I also don't really know how to save the code into a xml-file...

I googled for quite a while but I can't find an easy explanation. As I said I'm really not an expert at all and also not a native-English speaker which makes it even more difficult...

I'd be extremely grateful for any advice!!

ok sorry, I've found a way how to create a xml-file with the windows editor

I've also created the addontfx-folder inside the shared-folder and copied the xml-file there. As a test I chose the code for lower subtitles.

But where do I find this now in WMM??

If you did it correctly, it would be a new title animation. Go to Tools > Titles & Credits. Choose to pick a new animation (like you would for Subtitles). Custom titles should appear at the bottom of each list.

Okay, thank you!! It works now.

Is there a way to combine the lower subtitles with shadows?

Thanx again!

If it has this line:
<Param name="ShadowOutline" value="Outline" />

Change it to:
<Param name="ShadowOutline" value="Shadow" />

Or if it doesn't have the line at all, add it after the <Paragraph> tag.

It worked! Great! Thank you!

I didn't think I'd be able to do something like that...WinkWell you did most but still.

I also changed <Title name="Subtitle, Lower" guid="Subtitle Lower"

into <Title name="Subtitle, Lower, Shadow" guid="Subtitle Lower Shadow"

Is that correct or have I destroyed something now?

Absolutely! You can change the name, but when you do, you should change the guid to match. The "name" is what appears in the list of titles. And WMM uses the "guid" to internally distinguish them. If you keep them the same, then you pretty much guarantee you don't accidentally give two things the exact same guid which would confuse WMM.

Well done! Good job on the editing.

Could someone post the full title?
And Considerate Guy, isn't it good that vista effects, transitions and titles posted here added in the Custom Vista thread??
Well, thanks for now,

The full details of the original are in the pinned post view post 126998 under 'Subtitle, Lower'. Just make the changes noted above.

HUGE props to Jenniko for "getting it" !!!

I'm one of those who needs a step by step. Does such a thing exist?
For now, I'm really just trying to find how to turn on/off shadows?
