Widescreen?

Is it possible that I can make the movie widescreen? I can't find out how to do it. Is it an add-on?

it's an option in the Movie Maker menu... > Tools > Options > 16:9 widescreen....

your source files should be widescreen to not get distorted

... my website isn't here... it's at www.papajohn.org

Did you not try the custom Title posted by glow I hinted at above?

Another solution via PIP+ (install it first) is to make a black and white image something like this and saved with name and at location mentioned in the code below. Afterwards locate the new effect called "PIP+ Letterbox" in the effects area and apply over your clip.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP+ Letterbox" iconid="0">
<Param name="BorderA" value="C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\letterbox.png" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Copy paste into notepad and save as ppletterbox.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder. Restart WMM.

First of all I am sorry there is a typo in the code posted above... the first line is missing an essential term Version="1.0". (Happened since i copied pasted from a long file). This is the correct code:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP+ Letterbox" iconid="0">
<Param name="BorderA" value="C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\letterbox.png" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

In notepad, browse to the correct folder and then change the Save as type to "All Files" and type the name with the xml extension. it should be saved correctly. if not then maually change the filename using Windows Explorer.

Um ... I made the letterbox picture in .png format and pasted it to C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\letterbox.png and then and copied-and-pasted the code to Notepad and saved it as ppletterbox.xml to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\shared\AddOnTFX\ppletterbox.xml, but when I open MM2, PIP+ Letterbox is there, and so is the rest of the PIP+ effects I downloaded once-upon-a-time, but, now, all of the PIP+ effects, when I watch the preview and apply the effect to my work, it has the effect of a moving rock picture (i.e., bumps in a rock-wall moving, leaving a moving cave-wallish effect), but the original MM2 effects are okay, meaing that only the PIP+ effects were bothered ... anybody know what's wrong & how to fix it?

Thanks in advance. ^.^

You can try re-installing the PIP Plus. Perhaps you have the beta version which expires a while ago?

Hm, that works now, thanks a bunch, Rehan. But, although not really a Widescreen / Letterbox question I thought you guys could help me out, here: when I preview my finished video in MM2, it looks good, but no matter which way I save the movie as (and, trust me, done every single one), it's tinted slightly yellow. (i.e., black is purple-black, green is yellow, etc., etc., etc., ...). Please help.

More cheers & thanks in advance.

Try playing these movies on another system. Looks like video driver issues.

But that's the odd thing: I dunno why it would be the video driver when everything else video-wise works on the system. Even the preview in MM2, but, once I save it as a movie file [officially], the colors are a lil' off. Any other diagnosis?

Never mind, figure it out myself. It must've been something wrong with MM2, but I got it out of it. Thanks.

Rick can you describe with some more details what is happening? can you apply the other prebuilt effects in pip+?

To change the coverage of the letterbox you have to edit the border image in a paint program.

well, i downloaded the pip+ trial and I am able to use the built effects. I also saved the notepad .xml file:

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP+ Letterbox" iconid="0">
<Param name="BorderA" value="C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\letterbox.png" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

I get the letter box icon along with the other pip+ in the effects section and im able to apply the effect to a video section but it doesnt change anything. Thats why I wanted to know how to change the amount the letterbox covers the boarders, to see what it was set at.

Did you also download and store the border image to the location and name specified in the code?

After preforming Rehan's reverse video effect with AviSynth and Virtualdub, I found that AviSynth also allows one to add a widescreen effect to the video. It also permits the user to specify the length of the "blacked-out" part as well as the color of the widescreen. So instead of buying Rehan's Pip-Plus ($8), you can simply use (the free) AviSynth, which provides greater flexibility.

The letterbox effect can be found at http://www.avisynth.org/Letterbox

Bkrian, Thanks for your suggestion. hope many people would be able to benefit from it. Avisynth is an extremely powerful software and offers a lot of useful features. In terms of comparison of technical features alone, it can easily surpass many other professional grade and expensive (+$100) video editors. So my little plugin obviously cannot challenge its superiority.

However for the current context, 'price' isn't the right reason to prefer avisynth over pipplus since the 'widescreen' effect functionality using my Pipplus is also available completely free.

Hi,

I don't have the knowledge, patience or time to figure out yet another program right now.

The convenience of the Pipplus letterbox is great.
I think you can change the color of it too...... Ya ... I just changed it to red. It took me about 5 seconds.
