Frame that looks like a TV
Posted: 01 May 2005 02:34 PM
Hi, I just joined...
I was wondering if anyone knows of an effect that will make your video look like a TV screen? There would be a frame around the video, making it look like a TV. As if the video was showing on TV. Do you understand? I need this for a project, where a person is going to be sitting on a sofa, watching someone on TV.

I'm not down with all that genius coding stuff (really amazing how you folks do it!), and this is for an important project so I don't know if I can learn in time... that's why I would be thrilled if anyone could do this?

Thankyou so much!

Cristina

First install PIP Plus plugin for WMM.

I found this image on the internet. Save it as tv.png in folder C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus.

Now Copy paste the following xml code into notepad and save as pipplusextra.xml in folder C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX. Restart WMM.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" SpecialIconFileID="1033" SpecialIconResourceID="101">
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP Plus: TV Screen" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value="0.0, 0.135,0.1,0.73,0.73;" />
<Param name="Background" value="c:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\tv.png" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>

Afterwards find the new effect in the Effects area of WMM called: PIP Plus: TV Screen. Here is the result.

I have a question. How does one know what color to make the part that will be transparent? Second question. Can you use a avi file that is showing motion...as a frame....I hope I'm making myself understood...such as a frame of fire burning....so that it could be put on top of a video? If so...how do I know what color to make the center for transparancy. Please keep in mind...that I have no idea what I am doing...and the things that I make on this site...are by the seat of my pants.

you make it any color that isn't used by the image already in the areas you don't want to be transparent... the other day when making the inside of that art frame transparent I picked black and found that some of the blackness outside the frame was the same, so I went back into Paint and made the blackness a slightly different shade, using the custom color picker... that worked.

Dean Rowe hinted that a video could be used as an overlay also, but I haven't seen anyone pickup on it yet.

Thanks....I have all of these hundreds of effects in PI...that are so much fun...facinating actually, and would like to be able to share them in a way that the Movie Maker users can utilize them, so I was just wondering.

Hi kathokatho what is PI ?

> How does one know what color to make the part that will be transparent?

For PIP Plus the transparency can either be the alpha channel in the overlay PNG image; or if the image has no alpha channel one can choose a single color in the image. This is specified in the XML file as part of the BorderA parameter such as:

<Param name="BorderA" value="C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus\file.png; #RRGGBB" />

I prefer using the alpha channel in the PNG as it gives you much more versatility.

> Second question. Can you use a avi file that is showing motion

I am considering to implement this functionality in version 2 of PIP Plus. But it is rather challenging...

However if these effect movies can be made in controlled manner then there can be other ways to overlay them. So let me have a play with them a bit. How do I get hold of PI or whatever it is ?

It's Particle Illusion....its about $400. The version that is out is a couple of years old. It is my understanding that they are working on a new version for sometime this year. The biggest pain for me with this version is that the DV-AVIs that are created in WMM will not import into PI...so you have to convert them using some other software...I think this problem will be solved in the new version.

PI is made by Wondertouch Software. The program is costly (unless you know some shady friend who can get you a bootleg), but they (Wondertouch) gives you free (usually about 15) new emitters (effects) each month. Also, the emitters are sorta open to manipulation. For example if you have an effect with smoke...you can change the appearance and angle and amount and color...etc of the smoke. Also, if you have say....a cat being shot out of a cannon (don't laugh...it's actually one of their effects)....you can put your own image in place of the cat.

This program lets you place effects on top of video clips in real time as you go through the frames....and you can animated still photos....ie...Papa John's Bad Student film.

It is my understanding that Hollywood often uses this program for some of their effects...of course that could be hype.

Now that I have told you more than you want to know....I shall shut up.

If you don't get a copy, and can think of something you would like me to try...water, fire, wind, bugs, fish, tornadoes, sci fi stuff...stars, you name it....let me know.

Man I talk too much.

I can't get it to work, the TV does not load. It's named correctly and stored in the right location.

samhogy,
I'm having the same issue. I've got an email out to Rehan regarding this and his 'metacreations' transitions pkg. I'm dangerous as far as computers go, but my guess is that it may be a setting adjustment in the security settings under internet properties. IE: active x and script allowing. Do NOT make any changes to your system based on this post. Once I get my issue resolved, I'll follow up on this thread.

I use Firefox. Anyways, Rehan and Considerate Guy were helping to solve this in a different thread, and now I have got the video playing inside the TV frame, but there is a black border around the TV too!

Just retried with help from dick_mr. I've got the effect to show up in the pip + choices now, but when I preview the effect, no tv screen. where is the thread so I might correct myself, or what did you do to get it to work. I'm making a small error in how I'm saving/naming somewhere.
thanks

Ok, I've tried to save the image as both 'tv.png' and just as 'tv'. No success either way.
The 'save file as' has it as default 'png'. When I did the xml code portion, I typed in the 'pipplusextra.xml', and the save file was left in the default '*.txt'. that didn't work. So I tried the 'all files' in the 'save as' box and that did it. I'll go back and redo my steps with the same alteration and see if that works...will report back. You can see my basic computer skills are lacking. Maybe I should refer myself to papa johns section on that! haha

If you are looking for the tv.png file then it is included in the PipPlus installation. Look in the C:\Program Files\RehanFX\PipPlus folder.

Is it possible to use the same code for the old Pip?

I can't get Pip+ yet due to money but I would like to as soon as I am able.

Nevermind, I was able to find it. I am new to these kind of threads where you cannot edit your posts.

I still would like to know if it is possible to use the TV border for static Pips. If it is could someone post the code for it?

The code posted above is for static tv border/overlay. It should work without ever registering PipPlus.

No, that code will not work in the 'old' pip. But like Rehan said, that code creates a static (non-moving) overlay, and in PIP Plus the non-moving overlays work even when the trial expires so you will never have to register unless you want to have moving overlays.
